Securing the cargo in the passenger cabin without seats is impossible. Freighters and widebody belly holds have powered rollers and tracks and locks so uld's can be loaded, moved and locked down.

Another option is St Athans.

This is a very shocking and sombre example of what can happen when unsecured freight shifts around in flight. Plus don't forget that if you did try and temporarily convert a pax plane by removing the seats and installing securing devices etc, your cargo is limited by what can fit into the cabin through standard pax doors. Non starter

I take it that you didn't read that I had mentioned Prestwick in my post!

I don't think that Kemble would be a suitable location for British Airways, it's just an airfield. Not a CAA approved airfield, no approved fire cover for the likes of British Airways aircraft, no instrument landing systems. Kemble is basically an airfield where aircraft land but NEVER take off again.

No, I don't read every single post word-for-word

I was working in Comet House when, I think, the cabin crew strike, grounded most of not all of fleet. There were aircraft jammed in everywhere, and the view from the office was surreal. Somewhere I have some (very poor) shots taken on a disposable camera of it...must try and find them!

Cambridge Airport runway is 1'965m / 6'447 ft long so capable, there is a also fair amount of available apron space.

Cambridge Airport was due to close as an operational airport with Marshall Aerospace the owners looking to relocate. Cambridge City Council have plans to build housing on the site. But at this present time it's still open although not with many movements.

Oxford Airport runway is 1'552m / 5'092 ft so not capable. Lack of apron space, narrow taxiways. You can totally discount Oxford Airport.

Would it not be the case in these exceptional times that there's going to be a lot more space at Heathrow than normal on stands in terminals 1-4 that BA can use.

You would think that most airlines would want their planes "home ported" so to speak which should free up a lot of space.

As a slight aside I recall seeing a fly on the wall type documentary about (or featuring) Jet2 a while back. It turns out that the reason Jet2 is able to offer its very popular ‘civilised’ holiday flight times is because it uses its fleet for freight flights overnight.

But they are specially adapted 737s - a huge panel on the side opens up to allow seats to be taken out and freight in.

There are RAF bases with capacity. RAF Scampton used to operate Vulcan bombers but now only has the Red Arrows. Not sure RAF Wittering next to the A1 has had any planes since the Harriers were scrapped. Probably many more where planes can be parked short term.

When BA operated out of CWL, I was a regular commuter CWL-CDG. Post 9/11 I recall seeing a fleet of 747s parked up at CWL. Over the weeks the number diminished as normal service was gradually resumed. I would imagine CWL could still be an option from a space perspective.

Heathrows first response was to charge BA full overnight rates for parking. Other options were pursued as a result.

I don’t know if Heathrow have changed their mind yet.
