There is indeed some space, today's entire SOU departure list fits on one small screen. There is a line of forlorn looking Flyby Q400s and a few charters parked up though, [see excellent description from sotonsean below]. Though it's not exactly the arid desert...

The B744's with their huge cargo capacity can just about break even without any passengers. Likewise for the B777's. Less so for the A380's.
Guess removing seats on a 380 to allow for more cargo is eaasier said than done!!

I suspect this will hit the US airlines harder, as many smaller airports are already full of parked 737 Max.

This photo shows the size of the BA maintenance area at LHR. This is all owned by BA.

Whilst they can surely wedge a few in there they won't be able to completely fill it without compromising access in and out of the engineering facility...

SOU have very little room. It's a very space constrained airport. When I landed my small turboprop at Bournemouth on Monday I taxied past a VS A340. Quite a bit of space for a dozen or so additional aircraft there I would imagine

BA did A380 training flights from Manston Airport, is Manston now non-operational?

There are only 14 stands at Southampton

There are five Flybe Q400's on stands 6/7/8/9/10

Stands 1/2/3/4/5 are in use for current operations as in Aurigny, Blue Islands, Eastern Airways, Loganair.

Stands 1 to 5 could only occupy upto 3 A319's or upto 4 E170/190's

Stands 6 to 12 are not capatible for A319/A320/E170/E190

The apron space between stands 12 and stand 13 are where the fire station is located along with the Signature Hanger which is in use along with the apron space.

Aircraft can not be lined up on the centre line of the taxiway from stand 8 to stand 14 due to it's proximity to the active runway.

The taxiway between the northern runway exit at stand 8 and stand 6 is in use for current operations.

Untill the Flybe aircraft are moved from there current stands there is no real available space to park any British Airways aircraft at Southampton.

If and when the Flybe aircraft are moved from their current stands that would leave stands 1 to 5 to accommodate a few British Airways aircraft as detailed at the top of my post and stands 6 to 12 could be used for current operations. Stands 13 could accommodate a 170/190 and stand 14 a 170/190/A319/320.

There is absolutely no way that Southampton Airport could accommodate all of the aircraft that your proposing.

But I can't see British Airways using Southampton Airport for parking any of their planes.

There is not as much apron space available as your making out.

Plenty of available space at airports other than Southampton and in particular Bournemouth and Newquay has loads of available space as does Doncaster, Prestwick.

Stansted will be used by Ryanair so there's not much available space for British Airways.

Manston Airport is closed. It closed on the 15 May 2014 and is no longer an operational airport. There is no fire cover, no operational control tower, no insurance cover, no CAA licence.

The runway is overgrown with weeds with big white X's meaning that it's no longer in use.

Manston Airport would probably be a good idea if it was still an active airport due to it's runway length and apron space but the fact that it's no no longer operational makes it a definite no no plus the downside to Manston for any long term storage of British Airways aircraft would be it's proximity to the salty English Channel which is less than a mile away.

The only thing that Manston is good for is a lorry park 😉

Let’s just say we’ve been busy with lots of planning for the past week.

if you’re very quiet, you don’t need all your stands/taxiways etc.
SW7London, HIDDY, mjh0 and 3 others like this.

What about DSA? Good runway, but I'm not sure about parking space.
Who knows, in the current aviation finance climate it could even become a BA hub. Cheap as chips to park your plane.
