I don’t know if Heathrow have changed their mind yet.
That's a bit stupid on Heathrow's part as the airline best place to ramp up operations again quickly will be BA. Wonder what they could do if BA just parked them all up and proposed a suitable rate.

But they are specially adapted 737s - a huge panel on the side opens up to allow seats to be taken out and freight in.
Not heard of this before, is this some factory available modification as I've not ever seen a "huge panel" on a 737 for freight loading in place of pax seats?

I think their preference will always be an operational pax airport (or CWL of course). As Cw Novice and Jumbodriver just said, there should be plenty of space at LHR across all 4 terminals as flying grinds to a halt and overseas airlines hopefully position their planes back home. Just need HAL to be reasonable....

No idea. Here’s a photo though (albeit FlyGlobespan rather than Jet 2)

Wow, never seen that before (and I used to work for a 737 TPM, albeit about 30 years ago). Guess this might open up some options then of deploying some pax aircraft for freight as of course all the required securing mechanisms will be available and certified. Thanks again, interesting picture.

Its also worth keeping in mind that if aircraft are being parked up they don't have to be able to manoeuvre on and off a stand so can be parked much closer together, it looks like you could get 3 narrow bodies on 2 stands, for example by parking them Ying-Yang - rather like Club World, really!

Obviously this takes some planning and might be difficult to do at aircraft terminals with airbridges, etc in the way.

There is an episode of the documentary series on Edinburgh Airport that shows in some detail a Jet 2 737 being converted into a freighter for night operations.
The segment starts at 5:54.

That was about 10 days ago. Things are changing very quickly. And it's easy for a short, over-simplified statement to be passed on without any of the nuance of the original discussions.

Exactly the sort of greed that puts us all in difficulty, unfortunately.

Hopefully they will reconsider given the way circumstances are evolving. You would certainly hope so.

Although I don't know the restrictions or viability, you may think somewhere like Manchester would go to single runway operation soon (as there's very little air traffic) leaving a couple of miles of nicely concreted runway to use as a parking lot

I don’t know how much space there is in ASP these days- they took all the grounded FJ MAXes and I think some of the silkair ones. Of course if it comes to it they can close the second runway and park on their, plus the likes of Yulara, Mount isa, broken hill have a bit of space to park the odd one or two

Quite an interesting post from a Cathay engineer on Instagram about what goes into actually storing an aircraft:
