A7-LAA shows 2 rows of Business/CE in EF, but my flight BA711 ZRH-LHR had 4 rows this morning when I checked in.
The first couple of rows in Economy show 3-3 and all seats taken, so I wonder what happens to CE pax in rows 3 and 4!

Exactly, no row 1, only 2 and 3 in business and then from row 8 is economy.
BA.com says "no seat assignment at this time, you will be placed on the standby list".

Now it says for my ZRH-LHR flight:
Your passport and/or visa(s) must be checked at the airport
We are required by certain countries to check your travel documents before you fly. Please see a British Airways representative at the airport.
Passport and visa information
You can check the passport and visa requirements for your journey using the [IATA Travel Centre].

It is the differences between airlines that make it possible to have a favorite airline.
One area of difference between BA and QR is how they manage flight seating plans.
You are experiencing it at the moment so what does QR do differently?
In most QR aircraft the bassinets are usually placed in the front row of every cabin. So QR block the entire front row of every cabin until very late in the process, usually the opening of airport check.in! Then it is a first come first served basis. Unlike many airlines you cannot purchase a front row seat.
Since QR has no Premium economy the front row(s) of the Y cabin are Y seats.
QR will only mark a seat s occupied on the seat plan for a flight if a passenger has actively selected that seat. So it can happen that a cabin is sold out but the seat plan still shows selectable seats. That situation is dealt with by removing the cabin seat plan from the flight, a cause of worry to some.
It would appear that the QR methods are being used for the QR aircraft not BAs.
This will probably cause many problems and much worry. Let us hope that BA will use their own methods and not QRs very shortly.
This is intended as information not as the start of a fruitless discussion as to the differences.
