Club Europe Catering Guide 2017.

This thread outlines the new arrangements for Club Europe catering, introduced on Sunday 26 March 2017 and due to end on Tuesday 11 September 2018, based on 3 zones. A new Club Europe catering product is due to be launch on Wednesday 12 September 2018, and this is based on 4 bands. The main information piece - in terms of timings and the distance zones for the meals can be found in post 1. The following cross references the photos below against the matrix of options. In addition to the photos, some FTers have written extensively on their experiences so there is more to this thread than the pictures. Also note that there was an increase in food offered on some combinations shortly after the start-up, so the more recent photos may be the best place to start. The previous shorthaul catering guide, now locked but which had the previous 4 band system, is to be found here.

Numbers relate to the post number. Vegetarian means the alternative option provided as standard rather than the pre-ordered versions - which are VLML (Lacto-ovo), AVML (Asia) and VGML (Vegan) . There are differences between the offering in/out of LHR, LGW, LCY+STN. Last update: 833

very possible indeed if ba returns to the multimeals as pre-changes!

My my personal preference would be breakfast/rest of the day on all routes but may be with some finer grading: the full monty on band 4, a hot dish (no choice if it simplifies things) and small dessert on band 3, a cold dish (larger salad or current ploughman) and dessert on band 2, and a snack plate similar to current offering in band 1. I suspect the reality will be less positive.

I though 10:35 departures currently get a hot lunch for "long" flights?
From the first post in this thread:
Breakfast 05:00 to 09:29
A choice between a hot English breakfast or a vegetarian alternative

Rest of day meal 09:30 to 04:59
Hot meal with appetiser, warm breads, cheese and dessert

From the first post in this thread:
Yes, hat is the current Long offering, and we don't yet know what will happen after 12 September. So that's what we know for sure. We also have several confirmations of a reversion from 3 zones to 4 bands.

Previously when there was 4 bands, there was an extended breakfast on offer to ARN at 10:30. But to repeat, we don't know what this will look like in the future.

I suppose the good news for Uncle T is that he will definitely not be subjected to the afternoon tea ^

I sometimes feel that afternoon tea is BA’s “parents lethal threat to noisy kids on the motorway” argument except that we are the kids and that they mean it).

Parent (pretend stern voice, trying to sound like they mean it whilst they don’t): “if you keep shouting, we are turning back and we are not going on holiday, that’s enough now!”

BA (prétend honeyish voice, trying to sound like it’s a cool offer while it isn’t): “if you keep complaining about the new catering, we are reintroducing afternoon tea to ARN, MAD and NAP!”

Can we please stop slagging off the afternoon tea. If I am in CE, then afternoon tea is the only meal service on BA that I always have. I like it.

Hmmm, no! It’s great that you like it and I’m sure some other people do, but equally many of us absolutely hate it especially in its sandwich version.

You are right it’s the current version that’s the problem, it has the potential to be a great meal with the addition of some hot savoury items for example.

I'm also entirely happy with sandwiches and scones for the shorter sectors mid afternoon. I miss the scones, though the LHR ploughman's wasn't too bad. LGW less so. I was told that dropping the scones (ha!) did result in an unexpected number of complaints, so if they come back - as hinted - then I would be very pleased to see their return. As you can see there are a few scone fan boys/girls here. NAP and ARN are around the 1,000 mile mark, so that's a more complex issue. The previous arrangement was scones on bands 1 to 3 between 14 hrs and 17 hours, where band 4 was OTP (1300 miles) and beyond. Band 4 getting a hot meal instead.

It's very difficult to please everyone in this area.

I don't doubt that there are - at the same time no meal attracts as many 'strong' complaints as afternoon tea even in its best versions (see SQ and QR threads for instance, both of which have very highbrow afternoon tea). So I think that no meal is as polarising as afternoon tea. I think we should also recognise that part of the polarisation is cultural/national with a lot of non-Brits not enjoying it though some other occasional non-Brit flyers love it as a quintessential British experience (and part more related to food taste and notably people's taste for bready/carb foods).

I'm all for living and letting live, so I certainly I don't mind BA offering afternoon tea if there is a genuine and completely different alternative, but i'm afraid that if it is back to afternoon tea or nothing, I'll be avoiding flying CE in those flight times like plague - scone or no scone, savoury or no savoury - and I do think quite a few others will too notwithstanding the genuine delight of many others.
