Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Luxury Sale Fares in Europe

There's some TP potential with the newly released sale fares in CE to places like BLL and LUX.

JER-LON-LUX can be done for £224 for 160TPs and quick easy flights, albeit a change of airport. Or if you need to come from GLA instead then it's £270 and via LHR.

JER-LGW-CTA for £373 and 240TPs in July, if you want somewhere as an actual vacation destination rather than just for the TPs

LHR-HEL-HKG with Finnair (sometimes returning with a BKK stop)
LHR-BKK-HKG (returning without the BKK stop) on BA and Cathay

The Finnair is better on tier points and I can identify the A350 flights from LHR to HEL too. But reading some trip reports, the Finnair A350 J seat gets very mixed reviews. I slept very well indeed in BA J and don't want to do J flights where I can't sleep.

Any commentary from the experts?

Having flown AY last month - yes the A350 is a lovely aircraft but I doubt I'd do it again. Ground staff at HKG not great and the IFE on the A350 very light on content.

CX and BA way to go - or if you can find a fare RJ - I really liked their 787 to HKG and it was cheap as chips

That sounds like good advice. I do like to pass some of the flight with IFE.

I am 445TP short of getting to Gold for the first time, collection year ends 8th July. It so happens that I can earn some points going WAW-LHR // LHR-HEL-TLL next week, which I make 140TP for £274. This still leaves me 305TP short. I can get another 100TP for £270 flying home TLL-HEL-LHR later next week, but still 205TP short.

I realise that being in TLL gives me the option of TLL-HEL-AGP return, 320TP (I think) for £594, but the flight times just look so miserable, especially on the way back, that I'd rather do it another way. Also, I've been to TLL once already and am going again next week, so another TLL run from LHR (the other obvious way of getting 200 points) would be best avoided.

Does anyone have any inspiration for 205TP, or should I just suck up the flight times or TLL for a third time?

Further to my question above, I've realised that I can make use of the fact I'm starting in Europe to have the Saturday night stays be at home, and spend Mondays and Tuesdays away. This is what I'm looking at:

Saturday 13th May – WAW-LHR - 40TP
Monday 15th May – LHR-HEL-TLL - 100TP
Tuesday 16th May – TLL-HEL-LHR - 100TP
Monday 22nd May – LHR-OTP - 80TP
Tuesday 23rd May – OTP-LHR - 80TP
Monday 5th June – LHR-BRU - 40TP
Monday 5th June – BRU-LHR economy single ticket - 5TP
Total TP: 445
Total cost: £275 + £298 + £281 + £62 = £916

At £2.05/TP it's not brilliant, but it saves on hotel costs. Any tricks I might've missed?

They can be good - I have a couple of trips which I booked through them out of BookWithMatrix and landed in my MMB perfectly formed

But on a number of occasions I've found that Priceline puts some sectors into Economy without asking (or indeed telling ) so you do have to go over the final details with a fine-tooth comb

That fact is really annoying - I booked a fab routing AMS-LON-GLA-LSI-ABZ in J which got 20TP for the domestics; now that it is 40TP for J is is even better, but priceline now forces them into Y and I cannot seem to change them.

One bit I'm hoping some of you seasoned runners could advise on is the best way to position to CAI.

Ive been thinking of flying out the night before on BA which gets in around 10pm I believe and then the plane overnights and returns the next morning, (which would be the first segment of my run)

Ive only previously started from Dublin, and with multiple flights going there, it's not been too much of a concern, the bit that's got me thinking is if my outbound flight to CAI is cancelled or heavily delayed etc, then would that affect my whole trip starting from CAI or would BA allow me to remain in LHR (assuming it was a cancellation), and pick up the first flight from LHR to the US? I know there is a rule around missing the first segment, but if this was down to an issue with the same airline, would that be enforced? Naturally the positioning to CAI would be a separate ticket to the rest of the trip.

thanks in advance
fares out of CAI are great but its notoriously a pain in the ... for positioning flights; in terms of scheduling and pricing.
Done it a couple of times and saved a few hundred quid each time by doing so after hotels in CAI (and trips to pyramids etc...) But I'd not bother doing it again unless it was for a major, major saving.

Reading through your multiple comments:

London - Hong Kong
J class
20/21 May departure
25 May return

Personally I love the Finnair A350. The crew onboard are lovely and I found the food to be the best J meal I've ever had (clearly a personal choice!). I liked the northern lights themed lighting and still use the Marimekko hygiene kits for my travels today. I had no issues with IFE selection.

Some possible alternatives:
MXP-BKK on QR £1,531 21-25 May
MXP-BKK on AY £1,273 19-24 May
AMS-BKK on CX £1,626 19-24 May (note this routes via HKG and CX usually offers free stopover in HKG)
MXP-HKG on BA £1,558 20-25 May
TXL-HKG on RJ £1,587 20-25 May

All fares found on Google Flights. Should be easy to replicate. Could possibly also find a UL fare if you want to hit the spectrum of OW carriers lol.
