** AA Domestic First on two cabin will earn business TPs and avios for departures on or after 11 January 2017 - see reference posts for more details **

** Note that the practice of AA Domestic 3-class service flights booking into A for 210 TPs when I was no longer available ceased in September 2017. Discussion here. **

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Good route suggested by Foltan. JER-LGW-CTA. 240 TPs. I've priced it as low as £322.58 on ba.com - depart 5 Jul return 7 Jul.

That very much matches my experience.

I certainly saved a decent amount of money on a fare-to-fare comparison but it wasn't an experience I'm likely to repeat.

One bit I'm hoping some of you seasoned runners could advise on is the best way to position to CAI.

Ive been thinking of flying out the night before on BA which gets in around 10pm I believe and then the plane overnights and returns the next morning, (which would be the first segment of my run)

Ive only previously started from Dublin, and with multiple flights going there, it's not been too much of a concern, the bit that's got me thinking is if my outbound flight to CAI is cancelled or heavily delayed etc, then would that affect my whole trip starting from CAI or would BA allow me to remain in LHR (assuming it was a cancellation), and pick up the first flight from LHR to the US? I know there is a rule around missing the first segment, but if this was down to an issue with the same airline, would that be enforced? Naturally the positioning to CAI would be a separate ticket to the rest of the trip.

thanks in advance
I do the LHR-CAI run quite often for work. BA has only one flight daily- it arrives in the evening and overnights to return to LHR the next day. That means that if your outbound is delayed/ disrupted, the flight back next day is disrupted as well. So chances are you would still be ok to take the first flight and they would be responsible for reorganising the rest of your itinerary. Of course the disruption may still be a pain.

I guess you could try to ask BA to put you straight onto the US bound flights but I have no experience with whether they would entertain that. You could then claim tier points etc for original routing.

Personally I love the Finnair A350. The crew onboard are lovely and I found the food to be the best J meal I've ever had (clearly a personal choice!). I liked the northern lights themed lighting and still use the Marimekko hygiene kits for my travels today. I had no issues with IFE selection.

Some possible alternatives:
MXP-BKK on QR £1,531 21-25 May
MXP-BKK on AY £1,273 19-24 May
AMS-BKK on CX £1,626 19-24 May (note this routes via HKG and CX usually offers free stopover in HKG)
MXP-HKG on BA £1,558 20-25 May
TXL-HKG on RJ £1,587 20-25 May

All fares found on Google Flights. Should be easy to replicate. Could possibly also find a UL fare if you want to hit the spectrum of OW carriers lol.
These are some really interesting ideas - thanks for looking them up! I like the idea of coming out of TXL so will investigate that first. Any comments on the Royal Jordanian J service?

planning a TP run feb 2018

Ive been using avios and not gaining any tier points this year but after my year end in feb i want to do a huge TP run to get to Gold status straight away.

Does anyone know how I can do 1500 in one run? is this possible, if not how close could I get?

it used to be possible to do c. 1,300 TPs in one go quite easily with a start somewhere like IST or HEL (double CE TPs), stops in LHR, East Coast (JFK/PHL), West Coast (LAX/PHX) and onto Hawaii - I can't dig out the exact computations now but definitely remember looking at a few which did this for about £1/TP so excellent value...

nowadays...the US is a less fertile hunting ground since "domestic First" (which is what a business class ticket booked into...) no longer counts as 210 TPs, only 140.

you might need to do this by 'nesting' a couple of trips? Like do a LHR-HEL-Asia cheap J-class return on Finnair for a holiday, nest in a couple of LHR-HEL-TLL returns (long-haul seats for some of the HEL-LHR legs possible) and maybe on an ex-HEL return to the West Coast USA stopping over on the East Coast?

You could even get 1500 in one go with something like AMS-HEL-LHR/LCY-JFK-PHX-HNL rtn when AA domestic F and the babybus were 210 TP.

And it's still possible if you do something like LBA-LHR-HEL-LHR-BOS-JFK-DCA-MIA-SFO-LAX-HNL and back. Won't be cheap though. Luckily there is a TP run guide, available in the Dashboard, which gives cheaper options.

How about CAI - LHR - BOS - LAX - HNL for 1,120 TP round trip for £1,200? That assumes the CAI-LHR leg will book into business - I can't get it into anything but full Y, knocking 140 TP off the return.

That gets you pretty close.

Interesting way of getting 4 sectors in a week?

As per the title I need to get in my 4 sectors in over the next couple of months. Easy answer of course is a couple of Edinburgh/Jersey/Amsterdam weekend trips.

Ideally however I'd like to do a bit more of a exciting itinerary, either to get to some more interesting destinations or include some decent time in CW.

Would anyone be so be so kind as to make any recommendations.

Without knowing your budget and where you're based, this may not be in line with your expectations but a few suggestions for interesting short breaks:

1) (xxx)-LHR-HEL-TLL and return - 200TP (or 280 if starting outside London in domestic CE). Cheapest probably £330-odd over summer from LHR, add on another £100 if starting in the regions - but I've not checked. Availability in the cheapest fare buckets, which is £230 from LHR, is quite limited until November - especially for weekends.

2) xxx-LHR-yyy: Any short haul break in Europe, if starting outside London. This is probably the cheapest way of doing 4 sectors (aside from 2 HBO domestics perhaps)

3) If you're starting from LHR, how about Orkney/Shetland/other Scottish islands? If you through book from LHR on BA codes, I think the FlyBe/Loganair legs from GLA/EDI would count (it's worth checking though). That would be something a bit different if you've never been up there before.

None of that is really "Club World" though, I'm afraid

How did you manage to book that and what was the price? I did AMS-LHR-GLA-LSI-ABZ last summer booked via ITA matrix and Priceline but now it forces the little legs into Y instead of J :-(
