Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Question

Hello all, I need some advice from you experts:

I need 815 Tier Points for Gold, So I want to do a MilRun from 2- 8 may (dates are final because its my holiday) Base Airport RTM/AMS
Normally I was thinking AMS to JFK and then some 210 LAX or other USA city.
But I also read some nice stories about doing a run heading to Asia, like AMS-LHR-Dubai-Singapore or AMS-KUALUM-SIG.
I would really try the business service from Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways. (to bad that I wont be earning Avios Tier bonus)
Hoping to get some help from you.
Budget:1800 Euro

Perhaps an annotation or a strike that that run is no longer valid could be done.

I like this ^ For those textually impaired seeing the example might be good.

I think you'll need to relax some constraints to make it happen. Asia is unlikely to work out as it's hard to get even two long-haul segments each way into one's trip (which will still leave you short of your goal) without going to Australia/New Zealand, and those are going to be outside of your budget.

Going west, your dates are outside of any low fares window (even though you can still catch the current sale, I28SALE, just not its best-priced periods, if you book until January 27th). You need Saturday night stay to get a good price, but babybus does not operate on Saturdays. I see AMS-LCY-JFK-PHX-JFK-LCY-AMS with departure on May 1st for €2,056, for example.

Feel free to play with it on matrix, the routing codes you want are

lcy jfk / alliance oneworld;nochange
jfk lcy / alliance oneworld;nochange

and "long-haul" destinations in US from JFK include LAS, PHX, SEA, SFO, SAN, PDX (LAX will book into Business and not First as it's a 3-class flight, resulting in fewer TPs).

HTH.

Huge thanks to both alexwuk and Cymro. Following their excellent advice my trip prices up at £1742.09 on AA.com, which is within tolerance levels. Game on!!

Here's the schedule again, but with the flight codes and booking classes adjusted as per the AA.com quote:-

Mon Aug 10
DUB to LHR, BA 829, Class J
dep 4.15pm arr 5.35pm

Tues Aug 11
LHR to BOS, BA 213, Class I
dep 11.15am arr 1.25pm

BOS to LAX, AA 143, Class A
dep 4.35pm arr 7.56pm

Sun Aug 16
LAX to PHX, AA 569, Class P
dep 12.40pm arr 2.05pm

PHX to SEA, AA 566, Class P
dep 4.39pm arr 7.31pm

Sun Aug 23
SEA to MIA, AA 1070, Class P
dep 11.44pm arr 8.23am

Mon 24
MIA to JFK, AA 130, Class P
dep 12.15pm arr 3.14pm

JFK to LCY, AA6228, Class I
dep 7.00pm arr 7.15am

Tue 25
LCY - DUB, BA 4462, Class J
dep 8.50am arr 10.05am

I had a few supplementary questions, if anyone is able to answer them...

1) This is 1030 TPs, as far as I can tell. Can anyone confirm that?

2) When I called BA, this same schedule was quoted at over £2900 - is there any way at all to book this improved quote via BA so that I can use my BA American Express card to pay and thus snag that Avios bonus?

3) As the JFK - LCY segement is quoted here with the AA codeshare, will it count towards one of my four required BA flights needed to retain my Silver status? (I gather that three of these lfights will do so as they're BA codes on BA metal)

4) Can the LHR - BOS segment be ugraded to First (should there be availability) using Avios?

Thanks all.

If you are willing to stretch up to 2500 EUR you could certainly do OSL-BA-LHR-BA-SIN-CX-HKG-CX-PER-QF-SYD and symmetric return at 1040 TP. Some of those sectors are available as BA codeshares as well, so if booked properly you would earn the full Avios plus bonus. To do that you need to keep your stopovers under 24 hours (thanks to legal restrictions on the use of codeshares out of HKG).

Anywhere else in Australia or New Zealand will be a similar price. You can route via KUL as well.

QR often have offers on to e.g. BKK but 1800 EUR would be at the low end. Take a look in the wiki for some inspiration.

Hi Primosec52

1) Yep, looks like 1030 TPs

(2) & (4) are linked. Essentially if BA can sell it to you, you can UUA and pay with the Amex. If you issue it through AA then neither is true. Feel free to call BA up and walk them through the individual booking codes you gave in your original post and see if that works - or PM dutch_122 who is a master of these and has some access to BA's systems.

(3) - go back and look on AA.com carefully - it will offer you the BA flight number on JFK-LCY (BA 3) on the 24th (it did for me), and that should make the whole thing £30 cheaper.

For that money, you will struggle with an Asia trip, as BCN/OSL/CPH - DOH - BKK (which tends to be the cheapest route and which is on budget, excluding positioning flights) is "only" 560 TP. (BCN is marginally the cheapest but BCN-DOH is on an A320).

For your remaining 240 TP you could do AMS - LGW - MLA on a weekend for €690, or any of the other destinations around the Med or OTP/SOF/HEL) or you could look at a few connecting flights ex-BKK via KUL on MH (but you would need at least six legs, which makes it a logistical challenge).

In principle if AA can sell it so can BA, although sometimes that principle has its limits. Call again! Make sure you give the exact flight numbers and ask to be put in the specific fare buckets. If you are holding those flights on AA you may have taken all of the availability though.

Yes. The rule is, it must be either a BA code or BA metal. [There are other ways to qualify too.]

If issued on BA ticket paper stock by BA (i.e., if BA issues the ticket not AA) with a BA flight number, then yes. Not if you book on AA.com. If issued by AA.com the ticket will be on 001- AA paper and BA will not be able to take control of the booking to change it.

That's what my maths says as well.

Pass.

Anything operated or ticketed by BA counts, so yes. Even if it hadn't you might find that a positioning flight on BA to DUB is worthwhile in any event, so that would have got you the fourth flight.

I've never done a TP run before but I've decided to take advantage of the IL28SALE ex-DUB to construct something. I'm currently playing around with ITA Matrix and browsing some possible itineraries.

I've also been reading through the various relevant threads on BA Flyertalk (including stickies and wikis) but one thing which isn't completely clear to me is how do I book the desired itinerary in order to minimise price and to maximise TPs? It seems to me that if I were to book an itinerary through the BA website the price is often somewhat higher (due to different stopover rules?) and also on domestic 3-class flights it sometimes books into Business rather than into First.

I've seen suggestions on this board that one solution is to phone BA and ask that the individual flights be booked under AA codes - is that the best way, or is there a way it can be booked on the AA website using a BAEC number?

Likewise for US codes? Can they be quoted to BA on the phone? Or can I book on the US website using my BAEC number?

The best ways to book these are either n the phone with BA, or on aa.com.

You can specify the US codes using both methods.

There are some advantages to booking with BA over the phone, such asa being able to UUA if there is availability. This cannot be done with a ticket issued by AA. It can take some time to get through on the phone, especially if you don't have access to the lines available to those with status.

ETA: your BAEC number can be added to a booking made on aa.com

Housekeeping note

Dear all,

The historical data contained in the previous thread's wikipost has now been transferred into this thread - see post #2. This, I hope gives us a clean slate to develop a new wiki for 2015.

To the brave shepherd who starts the process of wiki-building - please feel free to zap the message I inserted into the wikipost this morning

Thanks
