Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Or... 2 options:

Option 1

Using the aa.com multi city tool, select the following city pairs:
HEL-LHR
LHR-JFK
JFK-LAS
LAS-PHL
PHL-LHR
LHR-HEL

Opt for selecting flights by schedule (not price), restrict to 1 change or less & select up to 40 possible flights. Also, make sure you include oneworld airlines in the search. Final point, make sure that you don't have any breaks over 24 hours.... If it gives you a crazy fare, click the option to show the flights and see if any of the flights are pricing into the wrong booking class

Option 2
Call BA to book, giving them the flight numbers shown. If you do this, make sure they book the AA flights with AA flight numbers, not BA codeshares

Would prefer all business class but happy to go in coach for short sectors.

My criteria:
Start in AMS, BRU or LON on 3rd August. Arrive in PHL, ORD, JFK or YYZ same day
Leave PHL, ORD, JFK or YYZ on 7th August afternoon or later - fly to wherever. I don't mind where and would prefer to keep flying with no hotel stays.
Arrive in Lon no later than very late on 9th August, but could push to early am 10th August. Will not use the final return to AMS or BRU, unless I can use it for a flight I'm taking to either in early 2016

Can anyone assist?

Many thanks in advance.

RolandLondon,

If you are able starting in Dublin maybe this fare will be very interesting.

BA835 J 3/8 DUB-LHR 1300-1420
BA297 I 3/8 LHR-ORD 1605-1835
AA130 A 9/8 ORD-JFK 1308-1628
BA174 I 9/8 JFK-LHR 1900-0700
BA4460 J 11/8 LCY-DUB 0650-0810

£996

Or on the way back from Chicago the following flights if more TP's wanted.
Then substitute AA130 for

AA4362 A 9/8 ORD-DCA 0920-1230
AA4321 A 9/8 DCA-JFK 1439-1604

The fare ends today farebasis INN7S4T1, so you contact BA for booking this.

Interestingly enough the TP's have posted at 140 points and have had to request that they be changed to 210. But, was definitely a much more comfortable flight after 3 x 757 flights in a row!

Great result ^

What does that link have to do with tier point itineraries? It is just links to services for booking award itineraries, arguably the complete opposite of what people are seeking here.

Thanks for posting. Actually at 140+140+140+140=560 TPs it just squeezes under the £3/TP mark.

Not just award bookings, as far as I can tell. It looks like there are a few in there that handle standard bookings too, aimed at earning as many points / miles as possible, so very much what people are seeking here.

I am really not sure referring anyone to fee based services to book travel is what this thread has ever been about, or indeed what it should ever become. Lots of people give there time for free on here, and are happy to do so to help others. This includes myself and I contribute quite a bit to this thread.

I agree that the more people learn for themselves the better, but I am not sure how sending them to someone who will charge a fee helps that at all. Obviously one of the points which was mentioned in the recent thread discussing how this thread could be better was that there should be more guides and general tips to help people to learn the basics. Unfortunately these things don't write themselves, so perhaps if we all contribute in creating that this would help.

The problem, though, is that many people make no attempt to read the guides and come on here expecting everything to be done for them. These are the people who should, IMHO, go use one of these companies / sites. This is one of the most active community threads on the BA forum and is a wealth of knowledge for people looking for status, or even just cheap holidays, but they should put some effort in to get the benefits.

Thanks for everyones input with my searches. I have got myself set up using Matrix-ITA and getting the hang of it (so hope to be a valued member of the community in the future).

Meanwhile, perhaps someone can help me with something....often when the prices come up for flights through the Matrix-ITA platform, I select the flights and then it points me to the websites where I can book the flights and the quotes that those sites (the airlines sites) are offering, which never seem to match the pricing that the Matrix-ITA platform suggests......

This is probably a rookie issue I am facing, but any input anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated :-)

Are you using matrix.itasoftware.com? Doesn't have links to booking sites (but Google flights, which uses ITA, does) - also need to ensure you are searching flights with available seats only, otherwise results a bit meaningless, and on AA.com that search results are sorted by price (it is an odd one)

If AA / BA my approach is usually to play about on AA.com - not the best system there, so can require playing about with how you construct the multiple segments (put in A-C and then look for A-B-C result in the list); can also call them

If you want to book with BA (to use GUF, get BAPP bonus spend Avios etc.) then call BA - specifying AA/US flight numbers so they don't put you on the BA codeshare...

If you're really stuck ask here with more details - and while I wouldn't advocate using a travel agent, sometimes the circumstances call for it (e.g. using GUF when BA shows no Avios availability)
- looking at your example upthread, I'd use AA.com multisegment and have first leg as HEL-JFK, second as JFK-LAS (and can narrow down departure times to limit results)

Hi, I need to be in PHX on 21, 22 or 23 November and found the following on ITA Matrix;
23Nov DUB LHR J Class
23Nov LHR PHL I Class
23Nov PHL PHX P Class
02Dec PHX PHL P Class
02Dec PHL LHR I Class
03Dec LHR DUB J Class
£1335

Since I will need 400 tp for gold by that time, the above itinerary more than covers it. The problem is that I will need to put my hands in my own pocket!!! Can anyone provide a cheaper option around those days? I looked at economy LHR-PHX-LHR followed by PHX-PHL-PHX as I will have 26, 27 & 28 November off but they are expensive.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Best wishes
AX.

ITA Matrix can have direct links to many booking engines(including KLM/Air Canada, etc... if you install special extension available here: ITA EXTENSION
