Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

perhaps you could give me some pointers as we have decided on HKG between 20th and 30th December 2015 ex TXL . (I would have been happy with Maui)

If you are going into Toyko, go to HND. It's much more convenient for visiting the city.

If you're arriving on the BA flights, they are jetlag heavy because you arrive around midnight UK time, so consider that if you then want to do a two hour drive in Japanese rush traffic into the centre of Tokyo.

BA/JL fares to Japan get two transfers for free in Europe and two for free in Japan, and one stopover is allowed in Europe and one in Japan, so you can build yourself a multicity trip for no additional expense. (But the routing map is tightly restricted, you can't zig-zag about.)

Try ex-Madrid for cheapest fares.

A quick look on the Matrix suggests that the I-buckets are closed, so it's over £1.8k per person. Going through HKG on separate tickets might be a better deal!

Can anyone tell me if I got this right?

YVR-LHR-ZRH with YVR-LHR on T and LHR-ZRH on K (because there is no T) is 200 TP for the roundtrip, but...

YVR-YYZ-DCA (YVR-YYZ is barely above 2k miles) all in W is 240 TP? (on AA, though it's codesharing to WestJet and US. It's listed as an AA flight on AA.com though, with an AA flight number)

Because that's just not fair, YVR-YYZ-DCA is less than half the cost (not to mention distance) of YVR-LHR-ZRH and it's more tier points? Did I miss something? lol

Hi All - just wanted to update from my TP run as promised.
I asked at check-in for earlier flights about a Same Day Change from LAX-MIA. The desk agent switched me from the 757 to the 777-200 into F - so, had alot of luck there and a nice bed across the US ^

Interestingly enough the TP's have posted at 140 points and have had to request that they be changed to 210. But, was definitely a much more comfortable flight after 3 x 757 flights in a row!

Nice one. Was there a charge for that?

They're quite dated now but I still have a soft spot for the F cabin on the 772's.

Do I need to depart FRA-LHR-HKG?
NRT is quite a way from the city but not hugely so especially if you're staying a few days.

If weather's important, there are certainly better times to visit than December but it's still an improvement on staying at home at that time.

Nope - no charge ^. Desk agent said to me "it's worth buying the expensive tickets" - I did say to him that the ticket didn't cost that much! I was actually perfectly happy to pay the $75 change fee - but he decided that it was free.

Hello Experts,

I need to go from Brussels to Scq.

But I am flexible in all airports surrounding me from DUS, LUX, Ams, PAr and Lon and all in between.
Flying to OPO, VGO, SCQ

Departing 27/7 or 28/7 and returning after 6/8 till 16/8.

Interested in TP-run maximising. What can you guys find for me? Something out of the regular. I searched Matrix and I found 395 Business on Vueling from BRU - SCQ. Are these 80 TP?

In no way an expert - hopefully some day! I'm keeping HKG to a couple of days only, plenty of Avios availability to KIX and TPE- but a lot of things closed for several days around New Year, including Imperial Palace in Kyoto, so important to do research there. If you do plan on a few days in Japan from HKG would imagine doing at the start of trip would be better.

IHG points for IC Hong Kong seems to be highly recommended for value purposes too

Hi Pinkcat,

TYO is a regular route of mine (25 trips and counting). Do consider QR too. I recently did QR ARN-DOH-NRT return for around £1050 in J. QR seem to do ex-Scandinavia J sales almost every other week at the moment, I could have gone ex-CPH for marginally more (edited to add: unfortunately your travel dates may well be blackout dates for such a fare).

In my opinion QR J is very close to BA F so no need to GUF2! It is a longer trip (8000 miles from ARN cf 6000 miles direct from LHR) but the flight gets into NRT around 1800 local time which works better than the 0900 arrival from the UK.

NRT is further away from the city than HND but I much prefer NRT and it's less than an hour to downtown using the NEX. I agree with the advice not to drive in downtown Tokyo straight off your longhaul.

I've booked an ex-TXL TP run to Hong Kong and have my TXL/LHR segment on saturday departing TXL at 1915. I'm just booking my outbound to do a same-day turnaround but can't decide if I should go early and spend a few hours in Berlin or do an immediate turnaround. There is a flight that gets into TXL at 1825 which I assume forms the 1915 departure.

Any thoughts? I have a flight to New York Sunday morning so can't risk missing that last flight out of TXL.

This thread is turning into a free travel agent thread more and more each day. In less than 24 hours, we have had 3 posters asking for us to make them up itineraries.

Can we kindly ask you to read the Sticky and the archive and take a wee bit of time to learn how to do it yourself, and then once you've managed to find something, ask us if we can help you more - bluntly asking us to find your flights and itin is bordering on bad manners.

If you genuinely don't understand, and cannot find the time to do it, then there are agencies/people who can do the above for you, for a fee. Check out the thread here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...e-reviews.html
