Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

i have an amex 2-4-1 and a 10 year anniversary coming up next year, so im obliged to make an effort for the first time in 10 years... A break to asia would be ideal, but can 'settle' for hawaii after being before ;-) it should earn me some brownie points for another few years anyway.
2-4-1 saves you half the points needed, but this was a full cash-only fare, so 2-4-1 would not have been applicable to this.
With this sort of fares, a GUF2 would be useful, as these could get you upgraded from J to F for free.(provided you find a good travel agent who knows how to use them).

Tier point run to fit into business trip

Hi,
I'm hoping that someone will be kind enough to help me with a trip. I've got a business trip in early August and it finishes on the Friday so I wanted to keep flying so I can stay the Saturday night and earn TPs whilst hopefully saving money. Would prefer all business class but happy to go in coach for short sectors.

My criteria:
Start in AMS, BRU or LON on 3rd August. Arrive in PHL, ORD, JFK or YYZ same day
Leave PHL, ORD, JFK or YYZ on 7th August afternoon or later - fly to wherever. I don't mind where and would prefer to keep flying with no hotel stays.
Arrive in Lon no later than very late on 9th August, but could push to early am 10th August. Will not use the final return to AMS or BRU, unless I can use it for a flight I'm taking to either in early 2016

Can anyone assist?

Many thanks in advance.

- Include a flight I can UUA for my first FIRST.
- No budget as such, just a decent return £/TP
- Longer high TP flights rather than lots of hops and short connections
My best suggestion for UUA into First would be LHR-JFK or BOS and then a +2,000mi "hop" across the country. The only thing to be wary of is the trans-continental flights from JFK as the flights to LAX or SFO will operate as a 3 class service and you'll end up booked into domestic business rather than domestic first.

If it was me I'd do something along the lines of:
DUB-LHR
LHR-BOS
BOS-LAX
LAX-BOS
BOS-LHR
LHR-DUB

or...
DUB-LHR
LHR-JFK
JFK-LAS
LAS-JFK
JFK-LHR
LHR-DUB

Either of these would bring in 780 TPs. Just remember that to UUA into First you must book on a BA issued ticket. When booking through BA remember to specify the AA flight numbers, not BA codeshares as you'll only get 210 TPs for the domestic first flights if booked on an AA flight number.

Ideally Id be heading from Manchester or Leeds airport, but as they both fly through LHR it seemed daft to add the domestic flight which offers so few TPs.

I'd be hugely grateful for any input. Even if it involves a slightly higher price, maybe up to £1.40 per TP.......
Most of us use ITA Matrix to find these things ourselves, but hey, I'm bored, so ...

Closest I can find starting early next week would be from HEL, since there is only a 7 day advanced purchase requirement. 920TP and a little over £1,200.

If wanting a bit more value from UUA could come back LAS-LAX-LHR-DUB (240 TPs), and out DUB-LHR-BOS-JFK-LAS. An extra flight in there, but F on a much longer flight to enjoy it. I'd rate F lounge in LAX above CCR by some margin, just in case that influences decision.

(Can make up the 10 pts shortfall to 700 via a cash booking to DUB, £80 or so available for 2 x 5 TPs in cheapest economy)

How many more TP do you need/want? Best I could find on the spot is

LHR-DUB-PHL-LAS-JFK/PHL-LHR

Leave LHR August 3rd, 6:50am, arrive back at LHR on August 10th, 6:20am (via JFK) or 9:00am (via PHL)

I-I-P-P-I, so 40+140+210+210+140=740TP for 3k GBP. 4TP/GBP is not a great value though, but with given dates so soon not sure you can do better. Maybe if you book transatlantic in cheaper Econ and then just go on an east-west first trip it'll be more efficient, but not sure.

Wouldn't this work out as a 630 TP routing (390 outbound and 240 inbound)?

40+140+60+210 on the outbound for 450 TPs - sneaking that BOS-JFK in there

I have a bit of a conundrum, the boy wants to go to Japan for xmas, its so far out of my area of knowledge (geographically that is) can anyone make any suggestions for HND or NRT?

Departure 19th Dec onwards
Return up to 1st Jan

Business class or ability to use GUF2 for flights over 2 hours
Happy to "position" up to about 7 hours each way

You could take the gamble that BA will run their Christmas sale again in about 4 and a half months - could be talking about £1000 per person. Have flown to / from NRT - it is quite a way outside city...

Or do the German shuffle to HKG on current sale fare - using TA to get GUF to F, then Avios for F to Japan (20,000 e/w per person - so probably still net positive on Avios overall)

Will have a look thanks, the distance from the airport isnt a deal breaker, my son is just itching to drive in Japan, so much so that he bought a Japanese import car!
Do I need to depart FRA-LHR-HKG?

Yes, but you can stopover in the UK (albeit the fare will be £142 higher due to APD). You can therefore do FRA-LHR before 16 August, then LHR-HKG later on.

I have developed a disturbing fixation on the East for the second half of the year thanks to a succession of attractive fares and GUFs - DEL, SIN, HKG (plus PVG, KIX) and SYD (in fact all were under £3, before any increase for GUFs)
