Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Which one?

In continuation of my earlier post, here are a couple of options I found for BKK with QR. Any suggestions as to which one I should opt for?

Amsterdam (AMS) to Bangkok (BKK) — Fri, Aug 21 Overnight flight
Amsterdam (AMS) to Doha (DOH) — Fri, Aug 21..Qatar Airways(Q.C.S.C) 276 Dep: 4:10 pm Arr: 11:15 pm 6h 5m Boeing 787 Business (I) Meal....
Layover in DOH.2h 35m.
Doha (DOH) to Bangkok (BKK) — Sat, Aug 22..Qatar Airways(Q.C.S.C) 836 Dep: 1:50 am Arr: 12:40 pm 6h 50m Airbus A380 Business (I) Meal.
Bangkok (BKK) to Amsterdam (AMS) — Mon, Aug 31..
Bangkok (BKK) to Doha (DOH) — Mon, Aug 31..Qatar Airways(Q.C.S.C) 837 Dep: 2:40 am Arr: 5:10 am 6h 30m Boeing 777 Business (I) Meal.
Layover in DOH.3h 15m.
Doha (DOH) to Amsterdam (AMS) — Mon, Aug 31 Qatar Airways(Q.C.S.C) 275 Dep: 8:25 am Arr: 2:00 pm 6h 35m Boeing 787 Business (I) Meal.
Not too happy with the 2:40am departure but is the cheapest option at £1104

The outward journey on the second option is similar. But the return is via LHR (BKK-DOH-LHR-AMS) which means I can skip the last leg. Not sure what QR do if you miss the last leg. Also this is more expensive at £1225.

6h 30m Boeing 777 Business (I) Meal
Layover in DOH.2h 35m.
Doha (DOH) to London (LHR) — Mon, Aug 31..Qatar Airways(Q.C.S.C) 3 Dep: 7:45 am Arr: 1:15 pm 7h 30m Airbus A380 Business (I) Meal....
Layover in LHR.2h 50m.
London (LHR) to Amsterdam (AMS) — Mon, Aug 31..Qatar Airways(Q.C.S.C) 5952 Dep: 4:05 pm Arr: 6:20 pm 1h 15m Airbus A320 Business (I) OPERATED BY BRITISH AIRWAYS

Any suggestions are again greatfully received. Both itineraries get me 560 TPs assuming I skip the LHR-AMS leg on the return.

Ok BA is no QR, but for me the direct flight from London goes a long way to offset that.
Yours for c. £1000 plus 35,000 (I think) Avios, most of which you'll earn back under current rules.
Thanks for that pointer to KUL. I think I would rather earn 560 TPs by spending £1100 or £1200 rather than spend £1000 on WT+ and upgrade to CW. I have stopped worrying about earning and burning Avios. TPs are still important for keeping my GC status which I am planning to do another year.

I am finding QR for £1096 AMS-DOH-BKK-DOH-AMS 27th August outward and 6th September return. But there is a really long layover in DOH on the return. I can leave any day from about 22nd August to 28th August and can return 7 or 8 days later. I have no preference of any EU airport.

Any quick help is very highly appreciated.
ARN-HEL-BKK-HEL-ARN on AY on select dates in August is £1087. Only 360TPs and BA-esque arrival/departure times at BKK (early morning). Short transit in HEL though (and from what I've heard, a great lounge). Can't post a matrix screenshot as I'm on my phone currently.

This will be of interest to me as I'm heading to HKG mid-August so have been putting the matrix through the ringer trying to find the best price. So far for that, I've found ARN-DOH-HKG-DOH-ARN on QR/CX for £1300. That with a maximised exOSL to PER for a holiday back home next year will get me Gold again...

Well first of all welcome to Flyertalk and the BA Board. ^

This certainly is the place to be for any BA and Oneworld questions including maximising TP runs and the benefits it can produce for not a lot of money. Of course as you can see from the many Threads on the main page almost nothing goes unanswered on a miriad of topics!

I've said it before and I'll say it again the expertise on here is fantastic and many members have specific knowledge on certain subject matters. ^

This is worth a browse if you haven't already read it. Post away!

HEL-DXB is the route that AY use shorthaul equipment for AFAIK. HEL-BKK is too far for any narrowbody Airbus (thankfully!).

Can't find I class bookings on Qatar site

Matrix tool shows me I class fares for QR 276 and QR 836 on 27 Aug and QR 837 and QR275 on 6 September. But when I look on qatarairways.com, I can't find I class fares. It shows D class fares for the flights on 6 September. It is coming up to £1097 on Matrix with all I class fares. Significantly more on the QR website. Will I have any better luck if I call QR reservations?

Thanks for any help.

ITA generally doesn't work very well for finding Qatar deals. The advice is usually to search on their own website

On QR website there is indeed no availability for business restricted on QR837 and QR275 on 6 September. But if you are flexible, there is inbound availability the day after, 7 September, for a total of 1519.44 EUR / 1081.87 GBP

You can try calling them. Unfortunately QR does something very weird with married segment availability that is not understood well by ITA.

Also, even when the class is zeroed out, you can ask a travel agent to request your seats on the "NEED NEED" (NN) basis, apparently that often works.

Finally you can apply to waitlist for the seats in the zeroed out booking code: once the fare quote is stored against the PNR, the waitlist often clears and the seats come back as confirmed.

Why does QR make it so hard? Who knows. To me it seems one either wants to sell a product or one does not; making travel agents jump through hoops serves no purpose. I asked our resident former QR expert for his interpretation, but he did not reply.

Not exactly a TP run as we're doing this for a holiday (albeit ex-EU and indirect to keep the costs down), but figure this is the best place to ask because of the routing and mix of carriers (all OW).

Am pricing up a trip to Malaysia in the ITA matrix for Feb and have the following:

AMS-DOH-KUL-LGK-KUL-DOH-LHR//LCY-AMS

The AMS-DOH-KUL and KUL-DOH-LHR legs are on QR, KUL-LGK-KUL is on MH and LCY-AMS is on BA - prices out at €2.7k each in J, which I'm fine with.

However, how do I book this? Can I just ring the BA gold line and get them to do it as they're all Oneworld carriers, or am I better off calling QR as they operate the majority of the legs? Want it all on one PNR as there's a 2hr connection from the LKG-KUL and KUL-DOH legs I want protecting in case of delays

At the bottom of the final page you will get a list of fares, and how they were used to cover the sectors in your itinerary.

If all of the fares are issued by the same company, that is with whom you should book. The operator/marketing carrier is not important but rather the airline publishing the fare.

If the fares are issued by different airlines, then in principle one of the airlines can book it on their own ticket stock provided they have a ticket-issuing interline agreement with the other carriers. However a telephone agent may balk at doing this (although I know the BA Gold Line will even book tickets on competing airlines). In that instance you will have to find a travel agent willing to do it for you.

When booking these itineraries you need to have a bit of patience and do not despair if the telephone agent cannot match your fare quote in the first instance.

Finally managed to book a QR itinerary

Found this on QR website for EUR 1696.27. It has been booked.

QR 276 AMS-BKK 28 Aug Business (I)
QR 836 DOH-BKK 29 Aug (early morning) Business (I)
QR 831 BKK-DOH 07 Sep Business (I)
QR 01 DOH-LHR 07 Sep Business (I), tight connection only an hour
BA 444 LHR-AMS 07 Sep Business (I)

600 TPs if I don't skip the last leg, 560 TPs otherwise. Good combo of QR aircraft too: 787, 380 & 777. Was tempted to return via FRA which is operated by a 350 but seemed like a lot of trouble.

Thanks to all of you who have chipped in with ideas in the last day or so.

Update: I used my Lloyds Avios credit card to book this itinerary. So no foreign exchange fee for the EUR transaction and very good conversion rate to GBP as well. Just checked the statement and it comes to £1206.
