Not really, just lived there twice in my life and actually spoke fluent Mandarin when I was a kid. Cant have been in China for a while and not understand how much you guys are in love with the no. 8.....

Ive picked up on this peculiar habit, and actually pay extra to have 8's and 9's on the license plates of the cars I buy and my cell phone number ends in 9888 .....

Gaucho, due to various constraints, we will be celebrating OTB night on sunday. we will be opening a 6 litre bottle of 2004 catena alta malbec. could you recommend 2 or 6 foods to complement the wine. we will probably open another 8-10 bottles of stuff stuck in the corners of the cellar and whatever guests bring, so your recommendations do not have to be the main course.
if you ever get to dc, we will have another otb night.

Nice.....
Few things are nicer than a monster bottle of Malbec....
Malbec is a rather versatile food companion, I think it will work well with cured meats (parma ham, coppa, etc.), hearty pasta like bolognese, and besides the usual dead cow dishes and grilled sausages, I also enjoy Malbec with strong cheeses like an aged 'Parmesan' Cheese.
Not sure I will be hitting DC this year, but I will be in the Houston area sometime during the 1st semester.
Cheers,
Gaucho

Carmello Patti's name comes up once in awhile in this thread and he's pretty well known for basically being a one man operation and running his "winery" out of his garage.
Anyways, I've found that getting some of his wines are pretty difficult in the US (especially if you live in the Midwest like I do) but the Southern Wine Group (https://www.southernwinegroup.com/ ) is currently selling his 2002 Gran Assemblage and 2005 Malbec. Every other time I've looked on their site they've been sold out of his wines.
If you haven't tried any of his wine, I'd highly recommend it. It will cost you a little bit but it's extremely worth it IMO

buried in their website:
We are currently seeking Wholesale Distributors for the states of CT, NV, AL, ND, MO, NE, AR, OK, MS, KY, OH, WV, RI, NH, VT, MI, AK.
those states listed are not a surprise. they have someone in the other states. the only one i would sign up for is NV.

Various factors come into play.... I have liked a good deal of what he's made over the years but there have been multiple issues, some directly related to the winery and others to the commercial distribution chain. Its a long & complicated story...
