Cabernet Bouchet is the other name for Cabernet Franc...

my books from the '50's and 60's claim that the growers in st emilion and those in medoc thought the bosch was quite different than cab franc, even though it was part of the cab franc family.

just read about the grapevine moth. in the article, ther is mention of over 30 clones of pinot noir.

Alfredo Roca pinot noir. in my neverending and frustrating search for inexpensive(cheap) pinot noir, i bought a case of 09 arpn. it is decent, drinkable wine.

does argentena have any controls over what goes in the bottle, compared to the label? from the back label "this 100% pinot noir shows deep crimson color...." about the color of fully extracted malbec, or syrah. has about as much pn characteristic as anything north of zinfindel. luigi bosca pinot tastes and looks like pinot. i do not have much experience with others from east andes.

"Speaking of Cabernet Franc.... have you tried the Benegas Lynch Cabernet Franc...??? " benegas lynch is not readily available in the area.

we sure do.... a winery bottling labeled Pinot with something else will get closed down quickly.... having said this Im not surprised that this Pinot you mention tastes a lot more like a zin..... its pathetic, but many new world winemakers (not only Argentine) are making pinot to such an absurd level of extraction that it just erases typicity.....

for good Pinot at low prices..... try to see if you can get something from Universo Austral.... their Calafate Reserva Pinot is very good for the price.

cheers,
Alex

the reason i asked was that US west coast, pinot noir only has to be 75%. the typical hamburger helper is either merlot or syrah or maybe also a bit of thompson. lots of cheap merlot, syrah and thompson on the west coast.

Wine in a grey sock

Is the Catena Zapata the only wine that the winery markets with the grey cut-out sock? The reason I ask is that while wandering through BA today I saw a 1994 priced at 2950 Pesos a bottle . I have a bottle of wine in the grey sock from the early or mid-90s at home and am wondering if I am sitting on soemthing of immense value (well immense price at least). Im sure I wouldnt have paid more than $US40-50 for it all those years ago.

Yes, the Catena Estiba Reservada is the wine you are talking about... its one of the Cult Wines of Argentina. Remember the 94 vintage is a solid year and its been pretty much sold out for a long time... prices will indeed be very high for the few remaining bottles.

What is the general consensus on the quality of the harvest this year and is there anything interesting of note to look forward to either from 2010 (probably too early to know for sure) or 2009?

I've noticed in Minneapolis that more liquor stores are starting to carry stuff from other producers than the usual suspects (e.g. Norton, Trapiche) etc which is kind of nice. Hopefully that trend continues.

Trick question.... as the current vintage will depend on the wine you are talking about.

like all the great vintage charters, i shall give you a single number. 91. actually, 91 and tannic. this number also applies to chile, however, do not use this number for australia or new zeland.

Im strongly against a one grade/one number to rate a vintage of an entire region...... this is simply wrong. In any event.... to which year do you assign your above rating...???

parker gives all the vintages he has rated 90-92, so i figured a 91(+/-1) should be correct, even untasted. here in USA, everything is judged and quantized by a single number
