Just for reference, a current vintage CZ Estiba Reservada (2005) costs USD160.
Passed through EZE last Saturday and they are selling it in Duty Free at $US159, I presume the $160 is retail in the city with tax included. So if I get a VAT refund of about 14% after fees/commission I only have to buy 5 bottles in the city to pay for my Reciprocity Fee

Your math is almost perfect... perhaps +/- a couple of % points depending on what your final bill is... 14% can be a little low if you buy a good number of bottles as at the upper limit the VAT refund is a little better as you 'amortize' the fixed fees in a more efficient manner.

Please email/PM me if you are in the market for this wine..... aside from the Estiba there are various other wines in this same bracket that I would suggest you consider.

the alexandria whole foods was pouring three flavors of catina zapada (as near as i could figure)at the afternoon tasting. 2 vineyard malbecs and a cab. i thought the wines undrinkable. maybe next week if open the whole 7 days. hard as rocks. funny watching all these dippy little ladies tasting and saying polite little things.they also had a 4th, which was under a different label, blended, i think with merlot, but maybe cab(i don't think or remember so good any more) and only $75 a bottle. the catina zapatas were $125/bottle. the one i saw was an adrianna(sp). i presume they will be poured again tomorrow.

slawecki-- Im guessing the wines were from Catena Zapata. The Cab based blend was probably Nicolas Catena Zapata.... or perhaps Catena Alta Cabernet..? The two single vineyard malbecs were probably Nicasia and Adrianna Vineyards. What vintages...??

new books. wash post reviews. Terry Theise imports the finest of champagnes. not very popular with ft crowd cause the labels are not that well advertised.
the tough to have much respect for a wine spectator writer. i do not know him.

ms catenia certainly makes good wines.

Should be available in the US for $25-30 per bottle.

Rutini has just launched its new Icon Malbec... the Apartado Gran Malbec 2008. This is the first vintage of this wine, and is a "secret" project of Paul Hobbs. This is a blend of old and new vines from the top Mendoza microclimates.. truly exceptional stuff. Excellent balance of power, elegance, mature fruit profile and long silky finish. Solid cellaring potential.... a new legacy for top Argentine Malbec has just been born....

To update the price on a wine that was commented on a few pages up, the new vintage of Catena Zapata Estiba Reservada 2006 costs AR$1500 per bottle....

Blame the Chinese..... yes, 90% of this vintage has gone to Shanghai and Beijing....

Earlier this year I bought a bottle of what was the current vintage ?2005 in a supermarket in Sao Paulo for R230 ($US130). I happen to be in Sao Paulo now and you have persuaded me to go searching again for another bottle!

That may be a good idea.... in any event, make sure we are talking about the same wine... this is not the Nicolas Catena Zapata, its the Estiba Reservada. Different bottle, different juice, etc....
