I've been looking for places to live but I'm having some trouble deciding. I've been using http://www.bytargentina.com is this a reputable site? Has anyone used this before? I would like a place in or near San Telmo, Moneserrat, or city centre.

My main concern is that I will book something that looks nice online and it will turn out to be near a noisy bar or something. Has anyone stayed at a temporary apartment in any of these locations that they would recommend? I'm looking to spend less than $850 per month.

Also I'm looking to take Spanish lessons from El Pasaje Spanish school in Buenos Aires for $1010 a month for 20hr a week individual lessons. Is this a good deal or does anyone know any other good places?

-We used Byt with mixed results this past Jan.-March. Don't even try to negotiate with them as they will consistantly say the owner stands firm on price. You will have to sign a contract in Spanish that gives away your legal rights to seek redress with the city agency handling owner/tenant problems and complaints. Personally, I would NEVER use them again.
-With inflation running at 25 to 30% a year, your US$800 isn't going to get you much. As for your satisfaction with the apartment, a lot depends upon the owner. Deposits are often not refunded or only partially refunded based on supposed "damages". Again, that's between you and the owner, byt will NOT be of any assistance as they only act as agent and the work for the benefit of the owner.
-A few suggestions when renting: For security, 3rd floor or higher. Always ask if there is ANY construction within a 2 block area as that can be quite noisy from 7:00 AM on, 6 days a week. Be fairly close to the subte(subway), markets, Bank ATM's, etc. ALWAYS, watch for pickpockets especially in crowds.
-All that being said, Bs.AS. is a great city with much to see and do! Enjoy!

Ive said this many times before and I say again..... go with reputable agencies like BAHabitat..... there are many shady folks in the temporary rental business, visitors beware....

I will be visiting BA for the first time on the 21st for 4 nights. I know this may not go over well there, but I am not much of a meat-eater. I much prefer seafood. I would appreciate a recommendation for a good seafood restaurant.

Also, I enjoy taking walking tours when I first get to a city--any recommendations for a guide/agency? I will be staying at the Four Seasons.

Thank you!

Nemo.

The tasting menu will give you a good variety and will usually have a fish or two not generally found in the US.

Thank you! That will be easy to remember.

I have another question--I like to pick up some nice decor item for the house on my travels, for example pottery from Barcelona and petit point in Vienna, that makes me think of the city. Is there any recommendation of what might be nice to buy in BA? I know it is famous for leather, but that is more something to wear.

If you want to have the best private guide in Buenos Aires, you need to contact Mariana Schweim. PM or email me for details.

What to wear...

Hello, my husband and I are making a 4-day stop on our honeymoon in Buenos Aires (so exciting). Thanks to everyone posting in the forum, we managed to figure out where to stay (Hyatt Park), where to go for a steak (La Brigada), where to join a walking tour, the Sunday pool party etc. Thanks for all the info, everyone, the city sounds fantastic!

However, being a female, I am struggling with what to wear ? I know all the guys are rolling their eyes right now and I accept it... but I want to look chic and not out of place... Any fashionista's advice from Argentina? Gracias Amigas/Thanks in Advance!

I highly recommend these tours:
http://www.bafreetour.com/english-home

Offered by a couple of young Portenos, lots of fun, and you see all the high points around BsAs. Tip them whatever you feel is appropriate (very low key and extremely friendly young people). Just meet them at the sites listed on the webpage, and get ready to walk a couple of miles and enjoy.

Do both of the tours. The morning tour visits the President's Palace and other historic spots, the afternoon tour visits Recoleta and a lot of the beautiful architecture in the rich areas of the city.

See their listing on TripAdvisor:

The Portenas are beautiful and dress well, especially to go out to clubs. I saw a lot of little black dresses, but almost anything goes.

For the first time after countless trips, it was time to play "cheesy tourist day." So we took the cheesy tourist bus.

http://www.buenosairesbus.com/en/

I'd call it a very good value - for AR$70 or $90 (24 or 48 hours), you can hop on and off wherever you like, with relatively frequent service. In fact, for the wholly-BUE uninitiated, it might make sense to take the 3+ hour tour through the city one day, and then take a few pieces of it another day to stop where you want to return. You can pick up the bus anywhere en-route (there are very clear stops) and pay when you board (but only cash accepted except at the start point). Most but not all have language headphones. A few are Spanish only.

The main areas covered are Congreso, San Telmo, La Boca, Pto. Madero, Palermo, and even a stop in the hamlet of Las Caitas (in the unlikely event you'll ever care to go there, or even less likely, know someone there ). 20 or so stops in all.

I have friends that live in a building in Las Canitas (street name Arce IIRC or at least near it) from which I can watch polo quite well if I don't care to go down to the grounds.

A lot depends on how old you are. If you're sixty then suggesting hot pants would be silly.
To be serious....I didn't quite catch when you are coming to BA but if it's during summer then wear some loose cotton...trousers or dress/skirt. It'll be hot and you don't want to be uncomfortable. I wouldn't be too bothered about dressing to impress....casual is acceptable everywhere.

Unless you are going to the Opera, or some of the very high-end restaurants like La Bourgogne at the Alvear Palace, casual attire (within reason) will be fine. Im sure you wont but dont try to push it with flip-flops and other beach-ware and you will be welcome almost everywhere.
