did you never have a even just a 2nd traveler (like a SO or spouse) use your BE account number when purchasing a ticket?

Wasn't sure I was going to pull the trigger since without FFD, and travelling as a couple, the difference between F and J is not big (if traveling solo, the bigger seat is a plus, but if not, you aren't with your companion).

My account is no longer active, since it was a sole proprietorship, and they weeded me out last fall. They let me apply the existing points before they closed the account, but now I'm worried I can't use them before they expire.

Anyone have experience getting a BXP1 extended or reissued without having an active Business Extra account?

Thanks in advance.

That's interesting. "Sole proprietorship" deals with ownership, not the number of employees.
Have they strictly forbidden sole proprietorships or was it due to only having one traveler?

forbidden sole proprietors is what I was told, and the showed me some wording to that effect.

they sent me an email saying show x, y or z to show you are a real business (tax return wasn’t sufficient).

I was on my wife’s account before I opened mine, but probably the last year or two, almost all travel on the account was by the owner. But might have been 90%, not 100 %.

beachfan May 15, 2021 8:55 am

Can a BXP1 be extended without being redeposited and reissued?

there is definitely more of a formal set of criteria to qualify now than there was when the program was young. From their FAQ's, it doesn't ban sole proprietors, but they do want at least 2 people traveling to qualify.
(Who is Eligible: Companies with 2 or more travelers that do not have a corporate sales agreement, discount, or other agreement with American Airlines, American Eagle®, British Airways or Iberia. Travel agencies, wholesalers, consolidators, and other sellers or re-sellers of travel may not have their own Business Extra account but may book travel for members."

As far as documents to verify you're a business, it's easy. Any one of these work as proof they say.
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN) | Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) | Federal Tax Identification Number
  • Articles of Incorporation (S corp or C corp) | Articles of Organization (LLC)
  • Partnership Agreement (General Partnership) | Certificate of Limited Partnership, Limited Partnership Document (LP, LLP)
  • Valid Business Name Registration certificate issued by a government agency (e.g. Business License, DBA / Doing Business As Name, Assumed Name, Fictitious Business Name, Registration of Trade Name)
  • Seller's Permit or Vendor's License issued by a government agency such as a local taxation department or tax commission
  • Utility bill issued to the business within the last 90 days (e.g. electricity, water, phone, natural gas)
I mean, if you can't produce any of these, you're not a business and you really aren't supposed to be in it, but it was looser in the past and many individuals did sign up (lots of bloggers encouraged) to milk some extra bennies they weren't designed to receive. Nice that they allowed you to cash out rather than just shutting you down and DQ'ing.

beachfan May 17, 2021 8:49 am

I stand corrected, it’s not having employees that are the issue. I would have had to show w-2s.

By the way, plenty of small sole proprietors would have a real business without needing any of the above. (Assuming you don’t count SS# as real Fed EIN). I didn’t have those but did have a consistently filed Schedule C on our tax return.

Interesting. I'm an LLC, which doesn't seem to be an issue

But, getting an FEIN is easy..

beachfan May 17, 2021 9:51 am

But I didn't think W2 employees would be.

Doesn't that mean several headaches like FICA withholding, unemployement insurance, etc.

I gave them an FEIN when I signed up, never had a request for W2s
I would be concerned if another company wanted access to my employees' private pay info, addresses, ssn, etc like that.
Oddly, I even had a few strangers somehow use my account number

Similar, I had it for years. Not sure what tripped it as my wife's did have two folks get credit on it (but only one in the last few years). Mine was only me getting credit.

I tried applying a BXP1 to a segment I have already flown now, as there wasn't any C space at the time anyways. I am trying to use the same award code to confirm into a different flight that has availability, but I am getting a "Your Business Extra Upgrade certificate is associated with another reservation." I am unsure why it won't let me use it as 1) the segment I initially tried to apply it to has been flown and 2) it was never confirmed. Is there anything that can be done, or is the award stuck in limbo at this point and I need to contact the service desk?

Have you tried calling CS?

Was going to wait until after the holiday weekend to call. But I ended up finishing my RT that had the upgrade attached to the outbound. So once that reservation was fully closed the UG became "Active" again and able for selection. Self fixed.

Luckily, it still had availability.

C7 on a 77W this past Sunday, so wasn't too worried. Worst case still in PE.

I'm surprised that BX points haven't been extended with COVID-19 shutting down large amounts of business travel. I have thousands expiring at EOY, any idea if there is an extension in the works?

I am in a similar position to you. They were extended last year and I would not be surprised if they were extended again. An early indication would be helpful.

PHL Jun 25, 2021 10:54 am

I have ~7800 points, with 5190 of them expiring on 12/31/21. It's not clear to me if I can redeem some awards (e.g. some domestic and international upgrade certificates) and then still have a year to use them, or will those kinds of awards need to be booked at time of redemption? If they are still good for a year after redemption, I should wait until 12/30/21 to redeem them and find a good trip to use them on in 2022.

not sure if this is still a thing, but for a while the awards were refundable with no fee and it extended the life. I redeemed about 5k points for BXP1s and then Immediately returned the awards. It reset the expiration of the points out at least a year.

That seems to be the best backup.

Hoping otherwise they will extend, but we have to wait I guess!

I will prolly have around 5000 points by the end of the year (of which 1700 will expire), so that's how I will proceed unless AA announces an extension.

platbrownguy Jun 27, 2021 4:13 pm

I used 3300 points to buy my AC membership again. Without FFD, I don't really need to use BXP1s these days, so the AC membership is a decent redemption. Essentially, spend $16,500, get a free membership.

Currently there is no fee to redeposit awards, and redeposit extend the data as if you had earned the points when the award was redeposited

I applied a BXP1 to a segment on a booking in Jun, which I may now cancel. Can I get the BXP1 cert back for future use? If so, do I need to call in or can I do this online?

Upgrading on Alaska Airlines?

I’m new to BusinessExtra, haven’t yet redeemed any points. I have some flights coming up that have an AA flight number but are operated by Alaska Airlines. Would these be eligible for BXP1 certificates?

If not, can I use SWUs?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

No. (AS 75K will gain an UG instrument for AA in 2022, but this doesn't apply to AS metal, unless you have GGUs) https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-p...e-upgrades.jsp

Systemwide upgrades can be used for one-way travel for up to three segments on American and American Eagle marketed and operated flights.

You can cancel and get your points back with a new expiration date, no charge
The cert should auto be removed if you cancel the flight, but if not you can call to apply it to a new flight.
Personally, I would cancel and have the points added back to your account
You will need to call

Btw, there's such thing as deactivating an account, and reactivating it?

What is the turnaround time for Gold elite status? I requested it 2 days ago Sat Jul 3 for a flight in 3 days, Thurs Jul 8..

enfuego Jul 5, 2021 8:29 pm

Are open jaw awards permitted? I didn't see anything on the BE website and the search tool there is RT only.
Specifically, I'm looking to book JFK - MAD; BCN - JFK. Is this doable?

Well, I called and apparently they are. The online booking tool is still round trip only though. Incidentally, there is no delay getting through to Meeting Services.

I have done it twice for son and son in law. IME it was 24 hours and 48 hours. however this was pre pandemic. If you don't see it on the account might call and ask about it.

MsEverywhere Jul 7, 2021 7:34 am

OK, to answer my own question, I called and it normally takes 2-3 business days. So if Monday hadn't been a holiday, I suspect the Gold status would have hit already.

MsEverywhere Jul 8, 2021 1:01 pm

Results:
I requested Gold status Saturday
Monday was an AA holiday
Gold status finally showed up about midnight Wed night/Thurs morning, so almost exactly 2 business days.

"No records found. Please ensure you are using the American Airlines record locator."
