Yes, I just canceled a trip (free for EXP), and asked for the certificate to be returned as points which with free with 2 year expiration from the time points are returned.

Thanks very much. I was able to process an online return with no problem.

Were BXP1 or other instruments extended automatically?

Not sure about certificates themselves, but points were extended.

EQMs using a BXP1 Upgrade

I took a trip back in Dec and used BXP1 upgrades. When I got back, I noticed that I got EQMs for the trip as if I was in paid first class. Was this a glitch? I don't recall getting credit for paid first in the past when using BXP1s.

was there any schedule change? Ive noticed that happening when a change happens and they retain the upgraded class

MiamiMike Jan 25, 2021 6:55 am

No, none at all. I found it very strange.

Are stopovers allowed on Anytime USA-South Pacific (BX9E)?

Anyone know if a BX93 Anytime ticket from USA to South Pacific would allow for the following? DFW-LAX-SYD (stay for 2 weeks)-PSP (stopover for 3 days) -DFW? I don't see anything about this in the terms and conditions.

Stopovers are not allowed on any AA awards; Doesn't matter if the award is booked with AA miles or BE points.

Just a point that is made earlier in the thread but I thought I would make it more explicit than I've seen it, because it just stung me.

Due to AA's married segment logic, the fact that C inventory is available for a multi-segment trip does not mean that it will be available for any individual segment standing alone, which is apparently all that matters for BXP1 availability.

For example, KOA-PHX-AQB. As married segments C inventory may be available for this ticket and accordingly if you call and ask if you can upgrade with miles/copay, you will be told yes. And if you search it on expertflyer it will show C. However, if you try to upgrade the overwater segment using BXP1, it will only clear if there is C availability available for the KOA-PHX segment if it were sold as a stand-alone ticket. At least that's what happened to me. This really stinks, because AA is severely restricting C availability on certain nonstop routes and only allows them on connections.

AAExecPlatFlier Mar 15, 2021 5:44 pm

nothing new. Not sure if you are tied into how you need to search on EF.

1. you must use the awards and upgrade tab for the query. You can’t use a general availability tab since C became a dual RBC last year.

2. and as it has always been, you always need to search segment by segment.

and there is NO married segment logic on SWUs. What u are seeing is false positives that occur when u don’t search segment by segment

But can’t you still book mileage/copay upgrades when EF shows C available on both segments of a married pair that you have ticketed even if the segments show C 0 searched individually? I’m pretty sure I was able to do that just before the pandemic. EF is still good for that.

Edit — just read the miles copay thread and I guess not. I thought it had worked for me in the recent past but must have been longer ago than I remembered.

Question on this. I actually have a JFK-LAX BXP1 waitlisted for May, hoping there is space in advance. Curious when A upgrade inventory became available for this flight, when you had to call to get it to clear, etc...Was it at least in advance or was it at the airport? I honestly don't mind calling in to Meeting Services, and not checking in online isn't the end of the world for me...I'm just hoping it wasn't trying to call Meeting Services while standing at the gate or anything.

Either way wouldn't it be nice if the system included waitlisted BXP1s for clearance along with SWUs? Alas...

Waitlisting a BXP1 is totally useless as AA IT just can't or doesn't process these. Indeed, IME waitlisting actually inhibits an upgrade. I've jumped the queue numerous times by simply calling once I get an EF alert.

Thanks for that insight. I've never actually waitlisted them before. I have EF alerts and just query manually a few times per day, anyway. Was just worried that waitlisting might actually actively inhibit things (even basic functions) if I'm not on top of it. Don't mean to steer this thread off-topic!

100%.

DMPHL just wait until you get the EF alert and then process the upgrade yourself on the business extra website!

To the contrary, I’ve had many BXP1’s that were waitlisted clear automatically over the years.

Have they launched any Business Extra promos lately for brand new signups? How far into the past can you request flight credit, 3 months, 12?

The flight must have been flown within the previous 12 months from the date of submission of the request.

Looks like it did as of 2017 (h/t to the folks quoted)

This absolutely still works. I credit all my AA flights to my BAEC account and have for the past 3 years... and get full BE credit.

Holy smokes batman, we FINALLY were able to use a BXP1 upgrade for flights. we are now flying up front in a 777-200. So excited!

Has anyone else had any experience of upgrading using a BXP1 and the app shows your reservation as CONFIRMED, but lists the amount of 500-mile upgrades you need? I have two reservations upgraded using BXP1 and both show this in the app. The example below also shows the price to upgrade to Business on the desktop site, but I've had that bug before so not overly concerned about that. Meeting service say all is well with the ticket but I never like to see anything out of the ordinary.

I have the same issue. Using BXP1 for DFW-LAX (On the 789 ... got PE seating due to status. I wanted to see how First would be so I used the BE upgrade) My wife was unable to check in and got a message she needs upgrades (she has none) and I simply got a message that I have to check in with an agent. (I have enough 500 mile upgrades) . We are on 2 different PNRs. The agent who did the upgrade told us the PNR had to be split. So, is this normal for BXP1? Is this a relic of when they used certificates and they were supposed to be presented check it.
EDIT........ No problem except it looks like BXP1 requires agent check in. I suspect it has to do with the prior requirement to present a paper voucher for BE.

We also were on the same PNR for one of our trips and had to be split. I think anytime we've been on the same locator they have split us before applying the upgrades.

I have 500-mile upgrades available but we don't have any status at the moment. I'm hoping it's just wonky AA IT, but I have had issues checking in as well using BXP1's. Please report back MVOIGHT if you hit any snags while checking in.

Does anyone know (*we are new to actually using the BXP upgrade certificates and were just able to use one FINALLY for a flight this coming weekend) but lookin at the same "flight" in October, have the itinerary on hold right now, I called business extra and confirmed it qualifies and they have space but of course as soon as I hung up, i realized i forgot to ask this so figured i'dget real world experience here.

If AA changes the flights around etc, does the first class upgrade also move with our tickets??/ October is so far our undoubtedly there will be a flight change but we booked the MIA-LAX-MIA on the 777 and woudl take mychances but if they change equipment or anythingelse and we get rebooked, do we still get moved to first class or do the redeposit certificates, or what happens then?

Generally, if AA switches schedules up on you and you're staying on their own metal, they will keep you in the ticketed cabin (which would be the upgraded cabin after the upgrade is applied, since it is technically the ticketed cabin).

If you bought Y and upgraded to 2-cabin F, it'll be no problem.
If you bought 3-cabin J and upgraded to 3-cabin F, it's probably a little bit hairier. You would probably, in that case, just get your upgrade back and stay in 2-cabin F. I'm note sure if they would re-route you onto a route (JFK) with 3-cabin F, but they might put you on a different MIA departure with 3-cabin F.

As with everything, YMMV.

Thanks!!!! I have to go back and look but we would still be in the second part of the cabin, not TOP actual first class, so I can't imagine it would be a problem, but thanks for the info, If we still remain up front, I will take my chances.

All is well, smooth check in at the counter. I guess this is some normal BE upgrade thing.

Ah guys, the upgrade to the 777-300 from LAX to MIA was amazing. First time on this plane and in "flagship" not that it matters these covid days but what a great way to use a BXP1. We just got back and I had booked another LAX-MIA later this year and just got off phone and was able to snag another upgrade for both of us to that flight, sooooooo freaking excited!! I am at work now rested like if i had slept in my own bed. I am only sad that I didn't end up taking advantage of the dining or anything. I just wanted that lie flat to be functional at work today LOL

Thanks everyone here for the help answering questions etc for me as we use these for the first and now second time.

I'm having the same problem now for someone whose reservation I applied a BXP1 to (MIA-LAS on the 787-800, great use of a voucher). Pax got the "buy stickers" message and is now skeptical of the whole upgrade thing -- AA really needs to fix this.

I called Business Extra and the agent had no clue, she asked her help desk who said they "took out a line" and told me to try checking in again, but still no dice. Pax will now have to get to the airport counter by 7:45am for an 8:30am flight rather than strolling up to the gate :td:

I mentioned that this was a semi-known glitch but agent said she hadn't heard of it.

With the cutback on the LAX-JFK schedule, my planned use of the BXP1s due to expire in October vanished as there seems to be no more A availability on the route, at least for end of July and October. Wasn't sure I was going to pull the trigger since without FFD, and travelling as a couple, the difference between F and J is not big (if traveling solo, the bigger seat is a plus, but if not, you aren't with your companion).

My account is no longer active, since it was a sole proprietorship, and they weeded me out last fall. They let me apply the existing points before they closed the account, but now I'm worried I can't use them before they expire.

Anyone have experience getting a BXP1 extended or reissued without having an active Business Extra account?

Thanks in advance.

You should be fine. I'd use the points for the BXP1. I just cleared a BXP1 from J to F, so have been monitoring A availability. It seems that AA hasn't been opening up A upgrade space until the day before. So I would not expect that they won't eventually have space to use the BXP1.

I feel like I got lucky. Not only was I able to check in on the app with no problems after a BXP1 upgrade from J to F, but I had waitlisted the BXP1, and was automatically cleared into F when space opened up this morning. Seamlessness when using a BXP1 feels bizarre.
