Same Day Standby / SDS (not SDFC) Rules & Discussion (master thread)

American Airlines Same Day Standby Policy and Discussion
(Not to be confused with SDFC / Same Day Flight Change - see links below)


Standby has its own rules and peculiarities: (As of 14 Jan 2016)


Same-day standby

Standby for a fee (waived for AA Elites)

For $75 on domestic flights, you may standby on an earlier flight under the following conditions:
  • Standby is not allowed for international flights*.
  • Has the same origin and destination
  • Is for the same calendar day of departure
  • Is marketed and operated by American Airlines or American Eagle
  • Changes to another multi-city airport or to different connecting cities are not allowed
  • You can standby for your originally purchased cabin (not upgraded cabin)
  • Standby means upgrades on the original flights are lost (you can not be on an upgrade list until your standby has cleared)
  • Standby pax may be required to gate check carry-on baggage
  • Standby is prioritized - see "PALL List" link below


*Standby between NYC-LON is offered for $150.

AAdvantage elite members may use the standby option for earlier or later flights.

Though it appeared those with checked bags were being denied SDS, JonNYC clarified that AA affirmed AA Elites are allowed to SDS if they have checked bags. Link.


Complimentary standby
Get complimentary same-day standby with:
  • Unrestricted Economy Class (Y fare), Business or First Class tickets
  • American Airlines AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Gold status and companions in same record
  • oneworld® Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby status and companions in same record
  • AirPass membership
  • First and Business Class MileSAAver award tickets
  • AAnytime award tickets
  • Choice Plus fares


Complimentary same-day standby is also available for:
  • Active U.S. military personnel traveling on orders or personal travel
  • Active U.S. military dependents traveling on orders

Q. What happens to my upgrade if I stand by for another flight?

Your upgrade and position will be lost. You can not be added to the upgrade list on your desired flight until you have cleared from standby. At that point, it may be too late to request your upgrade, given upgrade requests are normally processed prior to the standby list.

Lots of confusion over the new policies on this since merger, especially from former US agents. I've been told the same thing (if you scroll up a few posts). Best course of action seems to be ready to educate them on the policy and to note the difference between "i'd like to get on this earlier flight" vs "i'd like to go standby on this flight". They may have said the right words, but the agents are still learning the differences.

You're not going to get an email address for a station manager. As with all complaints, you'll need to go to aa.com and submit your comments, and hope for the best. I have a feeling you'll be told to pound sand.

I don't think this is policy any longer. Of course TAs and GAs can make exceptions at their discretion but it does not appear to be policy.

Thanks! It's not something I have used before, so I couldn't tell if it was an old policy phased out or a new policy being phased in. But in the absence of any written documentation from AA.com, I won't expect it.

Need some same day standby guidance, and I hope I am posting this in the right place.

I am slated to fly DCA-CLT-IAH tomorrow morning, but I just learned I must participate in a 30 minute conference call at noon EST, which is when I should be 1 hour into my CLT-IAH flight. I am PLT and will not be checking luggage so...

I am thinking the best plan would be to keep AA876, arriving CLT at 10:27 am EST. Then instead of taking AA2065 departing CLT at 11:20 am, I should standby for AA657, which departs at 1:05 pm EST.

Since I have never "chosen" to fly standby, I have a few questions:
  1. Is flying standby for a later connecting flight allowed? I assume yes, but I have been wrong before.
  2. How do I accomplish this? Start asking at DCA or do I have to wait until arrival at CLT?
  3. How happy should I be that my routing is not through DFW, where there is almost never the hope of a DFW-IAH upgrade -- especially when flying standby?

Does anyone know if the new rules disallowing changes to the number of segments are enforced by the system, or simply a written policy that agents are supposed to follow?

1. I believe so, as long as the connection time doesn't exceed 4 hours (though I can't find anything definitive as to whether this applies to elites)
2. I would recommend asking at DCA so you can be placed on the standby list right away. Make sure you get the thru designation as well.

Written limitation for LAA agents, system and written limitation for LUS agents.

Based on the Same-Day-Standby thread (where this will inevitably get moved), it looks like this is allowed. What co-terminal are you trying to change to? Also, what agent? AAngel at an AC? Check-in desk? Gate personnel?

I think the language for SDFC changed over the summer and seems to apply to standby as well. I've encountered the same issue into NYC and only recently.

“Customers using Same-Day Flight Change may only change to earlier or later flights that have the same routing, number of connections, and cannot change to a co-terminal in a multi city airport.”

SDFC rules are NOT exactly the same as standby rules.

This below is taken directly from the thread I linked above, as of Nov 18th. Although it's not a policy that is published online, it's as close as we have to that as it's provided by someone who I believe (at least in part) can see instructions issued to agents.

Changing the number of segments is not allowed for Same-Day Flight Change (confirmed), but the standby policy is curiously quiet regarding changing the number of segments, only stipulating that the new routing must be permitted by the fare rules. Also, standby does allow changing arrival airport to a coterminal (for elites only), which is explicitly disallowed by SDFC.

I take it SDC and SDSB are not possible on flight to/from Canada? Above references 48 states and online general terms on the AA.com site mention just LHR as the only foreign destination. Can anyone confirm if Canada (and Mexico) are excluded from n0-fee SDC and SDSB for an ExecPlat?

Also, appears no more co-terminal so since I am arriving into JFK, I must fly out of JFK, LGA is no longer possible on SDC but is on SDSB.

spoke with the EP desk and she told me that since the change this summer is was based purely on your fare rules.

Apparently my ticket is not allowed at all
My wifes ticket is allowed to do this but only JFK & LGA are permissable not EWR.
