I would also like to get an idea of which one would be more reasonable.

I am flying from Chicago to London Mid March.. Looking at ExpertFlyer there seems to be ample inventory as of today on AA or BA.

I also am One World Emerald...Iberia Platino.... I dont know if that makes a difference or not.

AA will 100% offer you a paid upgrade to business. Now whether the offer is good or not is an entirely different story. They can vary wildly from flight to flight and week to week.

Take a look at the below thread for lots of datapoints.

At less than the full retail fare difference (plus change fee if applicable)? ;)

I'm 5 out of 40 BOS-CLT today for 2 open seats. I cleared CLT-TPA 5 days ago.

EXP100 Jan 25, 2024 6:59 am

Last Sunday ATL/CLT, EXP with around 250K LP number 2 on the list cleared at the gate. For the most part I'm taking the cash upgrades, if not, upgrades seem pretty sparse to me.

2 weeks out, LAX-MIA has 12 seats in First remaining and using SWU as EP... let's hope something comes through but hard to get flagship upgrade on this route.

dc10forlife Jan 25, 2024 8:37 pm

1/26 - DAY to DCA - 1 EXP and 3 GLD all cleared at T-26

Also
CMH-PHX on 12/27 - no. 2 on upgrade list, did not clear no seats remaining
PHX-LIH on 12/27 - 1 EXP @270,000 LP cleared at gate, #1 on upgrade list with 1 seat remaining
LIH-PHX on 1/2 did not clear, no. 3 on upgrade list with 0 seats remaining
PHX-CMH on 1/3 cleared at gate, no. 1 on upgrade list with 1 seat remaining

Good luck -- SWUs have been diluted as the in-app upgrade offers are pushing out $242 before SWUs or C inventory is cleared (usually when J7 +).

Once you waitlist the SWU the in app offer option also disappears. You may have better luck just monitoring the in app upgrades daily, and waitlisting SWU closer in (or when there is EF alert). At least that was the case for LAX-JFK , I imagine LAX-MIA is similar.

The only firm-ish plans I have for AA long haul this year is CLT-LHR, maybe in May or maybe in September. EXP ~250k LP.

I haven't watched it like a hawk, but in general any time I've looked at CLT-LHR C space it's always been zero. 😅 And close-in seat availability even now in January, looking at this Thursday is J1 or J2. I'd have to think it wouldn't be any better in higher demand months trying to snag a last-minute seat.

If it's a really slim chance I won't bother with SWU and will figure out a different strategy.

I've noticed better luck with JFK-LHR with far out booking like months in advance. Maybe you can monitor on EF to see if there is any confirmable C space? Maybe even like JFK-CDG. CLT is prob a bit harder. But otherwise, I probably would not bank on SWUs... I am trying to find a way to use my 2 before March rolls around...

There are no comp upgrades on the 3 class LAX KFJ from J to D. I must be using an j stringent so it will be whenever and if they ever drop in an A award seat

The is a R to A upgrade LAX-JFK.

Question for my dad, he just got EXP from a DL status match, does he have to do anything to request a complimentary upgrade for his upcoming flights? Doesn't see anywhere to do it in the app or website like on DL.

It's automatic. However if he booked these trips before getting status then he might need to call AA to refresh his # on the reservation to make sure his EXP status is picked up.

Gotcha, he did book them before but it is letting him select free preferred and MCE seats now so I'm assuming it's picked up?

Probably although with AA sometimes some things can pick up and others not.

If he pulls up his reservations online and scroll to the bottom he should see an upgrades section where it will say "complimentary upgrades requested". If that's not there then I'd call.

I have two seats (mileage upgraded from economy to business) on the 77W MIA-LAX in a couple of months. Is AA still following the "no double upgrades" policy, or can we waitlist for F? What about award tickets in business -- may they upgrade to F? Wondering if that rule has changed since AA announced the eventual suspension of 3-class F.

No comp upgrades to F from J on domestic itineraries.
