2018 Program Year Elite Status Buyback / Renew / Boost (as of EOY 2017)
"Grace" for those close to completing status requirements has not been offered since AA began the buyback / renew / boost program.
In previous years, AA (and US) have offered those who failed to requalify for elite status the opportunity to buy back or "boost" status for the following status year. That offer was extended for the 2017 programme year, and the 2018 offering is be discussed here. E-mails have gone out to many members (16 Nov) with tailored offers. I suspect almost nobody accepts this offer with 60 days left in the calendar year.
However, come mid-December, more people will be weighing the option of... spend $800 and sit on my couch over the holidays, or buy a $400 ticket and waste a Saturday flying a 5-segment haul around the country.

They may have cued it up before my last flight a few days earlier (when I was at about 41.5kEQM).
Instead of taking the offer I took my (already ticketed) flight home and got the PLT requal that way :-)

This is pretty standard. The dollar level is a function of where you are towards Gold in the first place.
Gold is not giving away particularly much since it's basically 50% off MCE. The rest is largely cost free to AA, although some revenue forgone (bag fee).

Possibly the worst offer I've ever seen
I see someone had an even worse offer by $200 or so.

I received my offer of $699 to renew to GLD. I didn't know there was enough value left at the GLD level to merit even this amount. What I don't get is how AA came to the conclusion that I'd be interested at all. For the year I'm at all zeros for AA. My travel has been exclusively on AS having moved to their program (MP) with my move to Seattle, plus the devaluation of Advantage. And shockingly, AA has never once inquired as to why I completely disappeared from their airline. It seems reasonable to wonder why somebody who has regularly earned status, though not always, over the past decade, and was nearing lifetime status completely stops flying with them. Anyway, I'm keeping my $699 since it would provide absolutely no value.
