2018 Program Year Elite Status Buyback / Renew / Boost (as of EOY 2017)
"Grace" for those close to completing status requirements has not been offered since AA began the buyback / renew / boost program.
In previous years, AA (and US) have offered those who failed to requalify for elite status the opportunity to buy back or "boost" status for the following status year. That offer was extended for the 2017 programme year, and the 2018 offering is be discussed here. E-mails have gone out to many members (16 Nov) with tailored offers. If you look at the exorbitant price that AA offered to buy up from under 10k miss in EQMs, I wouldnt get your hopes up that AA would offer any discount at all on EQD shortfalls. The 8k EQM shortfall could easily be met with an outlay of 1/3 the buy up offers that AA was making last year. In terms of EQD, I don't see how this is anything other than the amount of your shortfall, I mean it's not like with an EQM shortfall where they have to set a hypothetical cost to have gotten those EQMs. In this case they know just how much you need to buy up, I wouldn't expect an offer much lower than that.

At the end of 2016 AA was offering "high" priced buy-ups (even to EXP), but that was EQM only (EQD was not needed then). But for pax who have already exceeded 100k EQM, they may be less draconian, since this is the first year two components are needed.
Based on future flts (one part of an AA Vacation package*, the other a TYP purchase*) I should cross 12K EQD (I'm way over on EQM).
*these are supposed to be "mileage based"
PS: I think DL offers "reasonably" priced buy-ups to their members who are short.

Both my kids are currently Plat, earned via challenge in 2016. One is less than 100 EQM shy of 25K, but has only around $1,800 EQD. Buy up to Gold for $699, to Plat for $1,299. The other has fewer than 4K EQM and less than $1,000 EQD. Can buy up to Gold also for $699, to Plat for $1,999.
Apparently no buyups to EXP. Wife has over 82K EQM and over $12,000 EQD but no offer.
I have already requalified for EXP but I tried it myself anyway. Sadly, no offer to buy up to CK.

Just another data point. I'm going to requal for EXP easily - have another $5-7k eqd and 60-70k EQM booked for the rest of the year, but am currently sitting at 130k EQM and 11,940 in EQD (so about $60 off). My extend your status offer was $345. That's probably the lowest they'll offer I'd guess

I am at $16K EQD and 72K EQM. AA offered $995 to secure Plat Pro. No thanks as there aren't many additional benefits to plat (1 more mile per $ and higher upgrade priority/no stickers).
