AAdvantage Aviator Silver and Red Cards from BarclayCard
There are five AAdvantage-linked Aviator-branded cards by Barclaycard. Two of them can be applied for directly, the other three are upgrades or downgrades after receiving a Red card.

The Many Flavors of Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator

Where can I see information on all available Barclays Barclaycard AAdvantage cards?

Aviator Red (On AA.com)
Aviator Silver (On AA.com)
Aviator Business (On AA.com)
Aviator Red applications are available at the airport, in flight, or online at https://www.barclaycardus.com/.

Red cardholders may receive an offer to upgrade to Aviator Silver after a period of time that varies, usually 3-11 months. The offer appears in the online "Offers" section, if it is declined there may be no simple way to receive the upgrade. Be careful with your clicking! Silver benefits begin at the start of the next statement, but the increased annual fee won't hit until the next card-member year starts.

Aviator Silver Vs Red
Annual Fee: Silver $199 Red $99
Miles on AA Purchases: Silver 3x Red 2x
Miles on hotels and car rentals: Silver 2x, Red 1x
Miles on all other purchases: Silver 1x, Red 1x
Bonus Loyalty Points: Silver 5k LP after $20k/$40k/$50k Per Status Year Red None
In-Flight Food & Beverage: Silver $25 back/day Red 25% back
Wifi Credits: Silver $50/anniversary year Red $25/anniversary year
Companion Ticket: Silver 2 Companions Red 1 Companion (Minimum Anniversary-Year Spend Required for both)
PreCheck/Global Entry: Silver $100 credit Red No Credit

FlyerTalk thread Citi & Barclaycard AAdvantage Credit Card Free Domestic Checked Bag / Baggage

Aviator Silver Bonus Loyalty Points: Bonuses are based on spend during status year, not anniversary year. When upgrading to Silver your Red spending will carry over. Five thousand Loyalty Points after spending $20k/$40k/$50k. You cannot stack multiple Silver accounts to earn this multiple times.

Companion Certificate: $20k in anniversary year spend required, issued about 45 days after you annual fee hits. Red gets one companion, Silver can have two. $99+tax for companions, round-trip 48 contiguous US States only unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii, in which case you may fly from your home state to the 48.

Barclaycard customer service is horrible and spent many hours on this. Maybe we’ll be nailed because we had the silver card before? Any similar experience or recent successes with silver?
For all the suggestions that you WILL get an offer after 12 months, that’s not been my experience. Had a red card for 5 years. I never received an offer from red to silver, I called, Barclay’s laughed, so cancelled. This while I’m putting +$100k /yr on Barclay AA biz card.

The boss has had a red card for +4 yrs. We are trimming the stable of cards, red offers nothing, so I suggested she call to see about changing to silver. In true pathetic Barclay fashion, she spoke w 5 people over 40 mins. 2 uninformed agents said to “just apply for the silver card online”. Right. In the end, they were happy to cancel her red card. Yes, Happy.

Given the uselessness now of all but the silver card, I’ll be dumping my biz card and move spending back to our citi biz cards. Not that citi biz offers more, but Barclay’s website is more problematic than Citi. And it cuts another card out.

One positive from the whole Barclay experience? Taught me that there are worse customer service reps than at Citi. Barclay’s cardholder phone interface torture, and their untrained staff have hit what must be an all time low.

Second companion cert at 40k spend?

Can someone confirm my understanding that you do not get a second companion certificate if you spend another 20k on the card? (I.e. At 40k spend). Or do you?

Thanks!

Correct. One certificate per year.

2 Years Later - No Offer for Silver

All, want to provide additional data points. I spent $20k plus for 2021 member year and am on track to hit that soon for 2022.

I am opted in to all mailings, am EXP, and have purchased mix of economy and premium fares on the card.

I have received many other promos for bonus miles, such as a 5x restaurant spend bonus up to $750/month for several months last year, as well as some other ones for bonus points for grocery purchases.

I have chatted, sent a message on the website, and called Barclays, with no success in getting an invite.

Infuriatingly, my wife, who is a Plat on AA, spent maybe $1,000 or so on her Aviator Red last year, received an offer to upgrade. Which we did not take because I am the status earned for the family and it wouldn’t make sense to shift spend to her for the LP bonus at spending thresholds on the Silver.

Very very annoying that there is no transparency on how to obtain the card upgrade. Sadly, I want those LP’s, and maybe they know that, so I’ll still spend on the card…

I have not used the card for over a year and it looked like I am being offered silver. What kind of core silver benefits so many people are after? 10% miles rebate? EQD with high spending?

Feel the need to add my experience here. I have never received an email offering me to upgrade, nor have I seen anything in the "offers" section of the website. However, I recently found an offer to upgrade on the mobile version of the barclays website. It wasn't the app, nor in the "offers" section. It was just its own little box under my recent activity. I could have just been lucky, but it may be worth checking out.

I had Silver a couple years ago and downgraded to the no-fee card with zero spend since.

I had an Upgrade to Silver option in my offers and I took it last week. Figured I would at least use it for the 15k LPs, as I had moved $25k/year spending to the Biz version due to the $3kEQD bonus it used to offer before LPs.

Thanks for the tip, I have this offer available as an upgrade from the no-fee white card!

You can transfer credit lines between cards. I just did this.

For those looking to get the Silver upgrade quickly, one possible issue is the timing of the annual fee; if you get the Red and pay the annual fee, apparently you can’t get the Silver and pay that annual fee within the first twelve months. Flew this weekend and current offer is no AF for first year, perhaps making a quick (after 3 months) upgrade to Silver possible. No guarantees, but hoping this helps someone. Here’s a pic of the app with QR code or just go to MyAviarorCard.com. Good luck.

That won't work. The CARD Act states:
No increase in any annual percentage rate, fee, or finance
charge on any credit card account under an open end consumer credit plan
shall be effective before the end of the 1-year period beginning on the
date on which the account is opened.
With a waived first annual fee, the annual fee is effectively $0 so they cannot charge any more than that within the first year.

I feel like I'm the only one here waiting to move from the Red to the no-fee Aviator.

I didn't find a credit card upgrade offer, but I did find a triple miles promo for grocery store purchases, which I accepted.
