AAdvantage Aviator Silver and Red Cards from BarclayCard
There are five AAdvantage-linked Aviator-branded cards by Barclaycard. Two of them can be applied for directly, the other three are upgrades or downgrades after receiving a Red card.

The Many Flavors of Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator

Where can I see information on all available Barclays Barclaycard AAdvantage cards?

Aviator Red (On AA.com)
Aviator Silver (On AA.com)
Aviator Business (On AA.com)
Aviator Red applications are available at the airport, in flight, or online at https://www.barclaycardus.com/.

Red cardholders may receive an offer to upgrade to Aviator Silver after a period of time that varies, usually 3-11 months. The offer appears in the online "Offers" section, if it is declined there may be no simple way to receive the upgrade. Be careful with your clicking! Silver benefits begin at the start of the next statement, but the increased annual fee won't hit until the next card-member year starts.

Aviator Silver Vs Red
Annual Fee: Silver $199 Red $99
Miles on AA Purchases: Silver 3x Red 2x
Miles on hotels and car rentals: Silver 2x, Red 1x

Aviator Silver Bonus Loyalty Points: Bonuses are based on spend during status year, not anniversary year. When upgrading to Silver your Red spending will carry over. Five thousand Loyalty Points after spending $20k/$40k/$50k. You cannot stack multiple Silver accounts to earn this multiple times.

Companion Certificate: $20k in anniversary year spend required, issued about 45 days after you annual fee hits. Red gets one companion, Silver can have two. $99+tax for companions, round-trip 48 contiguous US States only unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii, in which case you may fly from your home state to the 48.

Has anyone else had a problem upgrading from the Red to the Silver card? Agent said there needs to be an active offer on the account? Is this a HUCA or is this true?

I downgraded from Red to the free card earlier this year because I had no use for the benefits and the $99/year annual fee, but I didn't want to close a $44k credit line, now I can't get them to upgrade my card, I've tried calling twice and sending secure messages.

At one point I got an invite for the silver (I have red), but didn't bite. About a year later, I called and sent a message asking if they would upgrade me, and they said it's not an option - it's invite only, and that I'd have to wait for another invite.
I already have the AA Barclay Business, and AA Citi Executive World Elite, and I have other options to earn EQD/EQM and companion certs, so it wasn't a big deal not having silver.

I'll have to re-evaluate all of the cards now that we move to 'loyalty points', to see what the best bang for the buck will be.

OK, my wife did a HUCA and got an agent that was more helpful, but no upgrade. She was told the invite to Silver only comes from AA. AA want to see you are using your card to book flights on AA (Qty?), not just spend. I typically only book our flights using my Citibank Executive card. I guess we have to start booking our flights with her Aviator Red card.

This is unfortunately true. But AFAIK this (the offer) happens automatically after 1 year. I don't believe AA has anything to do with it.

In a possible sign of things to come, Barclays might be losing some interest in their AAdvantage portfolio as their Aviator Business card product was recently pulled.

I just got one to earn the $3,000 in EQD’s for 2021 but after that I’m done as the card doesn’t offer any benefit in 2022, other than earning 1 LP per $ spent. Probably why they pulled it. An interesting side note, the credit limit assigned was 1/6th of the limit I have on the Red card. The red card isn’t that great either when it comes to earning LP’s for 2022. How quickly can I convert it to the Silver card?

Can't speak to the conversion timeframe but at second glance I assume that Barclays is less than happy with their end of this curious card menage-a-trois with Citi. Unrelated to the LP changes, it's getting progressively harder to differentiate between their offering and Citi's. They only have a single consumer card left on their retail website and they went through a rather difficult conversion process with their aviator product servicing platform so unfortunately for the captive audience, the saving grace for Barclays at the moment is those inflight pitches.

Is there any way to upgrade an Aviator Business Card to the Silver?

No, there were 4 personal cards where you could product change between and only one business card. There's no way to PC between business and personal cards.

Does the Aviator Red Mastercard cover car rentals in case of an accident? I believe it did at one time but not sure if that changed.

According to this .pdf, yes. But it appears to be secondary coverage.

Not sure of your own car insurance situation, but depending on your (anyone's) personal auto policies, it may extend to rental car coverage, but check with your insurance provider.

Signed up, fee waived first year. Bought a soda in a vending machine, paid the monthly bill and had 60,000 miles in my AA account two days later. Might consider using this card for the companion cert and AA spend.
