AA Ends International Award Free N. America Gateway Stopover
As of April 8, 2014 - no prior notice given.

● As of 8 April 2014, AA North America to international destination awards no longer offer a voluntary stopover at the N. A. international gateway.

● Stopovers are defined as more than 4 hours for itineraries using an award within/between the U.S./Canada/PR/USVI and more than 24 hours for itineraries using a Mexico, Caribbean or other international award as of 8 Jan 2014. (JonNYC).

● Awards ticketed prior to April 8 can add or change a stopover. Refer the AAgent to the "All Partner Award Guidelines" document which can be found on jetnet at Webref-> jetnet-> aawrcontent-> res-> resstaff-> internal-> AADAP. Giving this to the agent should be enough to find it. This is from the version dated 7/22/2014 with credit to JonNYC:

Tickets issued prior to April 8, 2014, free international stopovers on international awards are allowed at the North American gateway.

●For stopover purposes only, the North American gateway is defined as the passenger's first point of arrival or last point of departure in the U.S./Canada/PR/USVI/Mexico

●Stopovers within/between all other regions require additional awards
●Changes or adding a stopover to this ticket will require a call to Tariff for PQR prior to setting up reissue
This thread is for discussion of the now eliminated international north american gateway stopover on awards.

Cur-mia-nyc will price at 15k if <24h in Mia. Put it on hold, call to reprice, and have the agent put it on hold again, if it won't price out online.

<24h layovers on an international itinerary are fine. Free stopovers at the international gateway on award tickets have been eliminated several years ago.

"Layover" is a bad term or not a term at all. One is either on a connection (generally <24 hours) or a stopover (generally 24+ hours). How long does OP want to spend at MIA?

I was trying to get a free stopover ( more than 24 hrs) in MIA. I didn't realize the free stopover was eliminated. Thank you.

They went away with the introduction of one-way awards, IIRC, which was probably a good trade in my opinion.

Even when the free "North American gateway" stopover was permitted, it would not have been available on your itinerary. CUR is within AA's North America zone. The stopover was only permitted when traveling -- in either direction -- between North America and another zone.

No, the free stopover went away in a 2014 bloodbAAth, but one-way awards have been around longer. Example quote from 2013 era:
American Airlines books all awards as one-way awards and allows a free stopover in the gateway city from which you leave North America.

I tried doing the following and it tried charging me for the international gateway layover in MIA so I didn't book it. Shouldn't the 3rd segment be free?

1st segment > NYC-CUR 15k
2nd segment> CUR-MIA 15k
3rd segment> MIA-NYC 12.5k
By the way, if you you can get yourself some BA Avios, CUR-MIA on an AA nonstop would cost just 10K Avios; MIA-NYC (any airport) on an AA nonstop would cost just 7.5K Avios.

So I have FUK-HND-SFO on JL and I want make a long connection at HND overnight. Right now I have 23H45M connection.
I want to change it to 24H15M connection. It's only 15 minutes longer than 24 hours.... Is it worth to ask anyway???

There's no grey area or wiggle room, etc. AA's computers will automatically price anything over 24 hrs as separate awards, even if its 24HR01M...
