Just came from MIA. At least some of the low D gates were operational today as promised. I noticed flights on the board leaving from D-12 and D-16. However E was also still operational so the changeover is not complete. I could not tell if the new TSA Checkpoint 1 near the low D gates was open as I did not bother to hike down that far.

Looks the same as yesterday. Only gates 10, 12, 14, 16 and 20 opened. If you note on the map they are all on the same side of the low "D" terminal. I wonder what the hold up is? The MIA website still says gates 1-20 open today but, only the ones that opened yesterday are open today, no new ones.

The horseshoe design at MIA is much smaller than SFO or ORD, and the walk should be only a few hundred feet at the longest point.

The new Eagle regional concourse should be opening in the next few weeks, without the covered walkway, and the dungeon Eagle gate D35 will then close. Currently scheduled for 8/3, although this will probably change.

Expect to hear a lot of complaining about the long walk to the eagle gates for a few weeks until the train opens.

To the contrary, the MIA mover was originally scheduled for 2012, but the completion has now been advanced to 2011. The website has not been updated yet.

In concourse A, The 8 gates closest to the existing D gates are now open, and the High E gates are not being used by AA. The far 8 gates in concourse A will reopen when the train is operational in September.

In MIA today (long delays MIA to SFO due to mechanical) and used the new car rental center... VERY NICE and a huge improvement over the old mess. Very easy to return cars now - dedicated ramp off of Le Jeune and you zoom right in there. Bus was not crowded though the boarding process was a little crazy - I went to 3 different buses trying to figure out which one was going "next"... turns out...they ALL were.

This is going to be a very nice airport once the train starts running in September.^

Hi All,

As you all know the entire concourse is in progress during the constructions throughout 1999-2010 timelines. The entire concourse A is not fully opened for the public. Also, the entire concourse C is already demolished. Also, temporary baggage sorting system facility soon to be demolished, too and they already completion done new baggage handling system. As you can see new concourse J is already completion done.

Also, regional facility will start constructions during the times and soon to be completion done in between 2011 or 12. So here the Google Map:

AA terminal D will takeover and The Oneworld Alliance does not have enough gate space but, it will have to remains in the concourse E facility until new concourse A will fully opened. However, if you would likes to see brand new concourse D extension will be completion done until 2011. You have to stay with them while you are during on the tour to see new concourse D extension and also, old concourse D will underway renovations. You will have to give the proper permission from MDAD will have approval to get your escorted badge to get inside at security. You will have a offer to get inside the terminal tour for you guys.

In true Miami fashion, the train connecting it to the airport itself will not be operational until Fall 2011.
Yeah, I didn't realize know that. I can't wait to see new MIA mover will be completion in between 2011 or 2012 timelines.

Yeah, I didn't like it there at all. It was so horrible old concourse E satellite terminals for more than 30 years old. Its time to be demolition as soon as possible. It will eventually to start underway renovations the entire concourse E & Concourse E satellite terminals, too.

I am sitting in the new Gate 60 waiting out a rain closure of the ramp. I am underwhelmed by the new facility. Loud, crowded, not much better than the dungeon where Eagle used to board. The walkways are not finished (gate agent had no idea when they would be finally built) so boarding is still by bus.

The walkways will be complete in about six months. Although the new regional terminal is not fully complete yet, it was necessary to move Eagle now in order to demolish the dungeon and construct new mainline gates there.

I went through D60 last night. It seems like it should have been bigger. I am sure there will be times when there will be no seats. The amount of time it took to go from plane to baggage was rediculous. It will be better when the train is open. For now it was a bus and then a mile long walk. It was fun late at night with young kids.

They have really done a great job with MIA. This goes back to the early 1980's when I worked there, I used to enjoy walking from one end of the ticket counters (Eastern) to the other end (Delta). Must have been over a half-mile long. There were so many airlines too.
They also have done a great job with FLL too.

The last few times I've arrived at MIA, our gate has not been ready causing 20-30 minute waits on the taxiway. Two times we landed late, and once was a little early. Do they still not have enough gates for their hub opperation? One would think they know when the plane will land with enough notice to facilitate a gate change before the plane lands.

Do others regularly experience this gate wait/delay at other airports, or is this mostly a MIA situation?

I think it tends to be worse at MIA.

Last weekend I missed my connection because of gate wait. Worse, we landed 30 minutes early and sat on a the ramp - next to four gates that remained unoccupied during the entirety of our wait - waiting for our gate to open. Ultimately, we waited 50 minutes for a gate. The Captain made numerous PAs saying he was contacting AA operations requesting to move to an empty gate but AA kept rejecting his request. To make matters even worse, we arrived at D-12 and my connection was in the E terminal. Despite sprinting as fast as I could with two carry-ons (and I'm a decent runner) - it still took me 15 minutes to reach my gate where I missed my connection by under 2 minutes (plane still at the gate with door open, but flight had already been closed).

Until the shuttle opens, expect a very long walk if arriving at the low D gates and connecting to E terminal. I really don't even see how a 40min Domestic-Domestic minimum connection time is even possible if sitting in the back of coach given the distance between these gates.

I don't think its lack of gates. I can't tell you the number of times that I have sat on the tarmac waiting for a gate when I could easily see numerous open gates. True, a few of the gates are restricted in a/c size. Good news is that I was told yesterday in the FL that the train is set to begin running on September 15. Yesterday going from the FL to D12 was a good 20 minute walk.

AMEN. I've had immigrations, AA agents and restaurant employees service me (barely) while on their cell phones.

There are also numerous agents who would much rather repeat something in Spanish to you 3x than in English one time. Thank god that I've learnt Spanish now, otherwise I'd be ready to kill someone.
