MODERATOR GUIDEPOST
On April 16, 2013, AA suffered widespread problems (bookings, changes, aircraft holds and cancellations) caused by an HP-owned communications link breakdown. Many travellers were affected by cancelled or extensively delayed flights; this thread was dedicated to providing as current information as possible to members involved, and extraneous comments were suppressed by deletion and members asked to hew to strict informational guidelines.
The original wikipost can be read in the first post's Moderator Note.
Those still travelling and affected were advised to read this post this post.
The thread relating to proactive and related compensation provided to distressed / affected flyers as a result of the 16 Apr 2013 events can be read here.

No, not ridiculous at all. We don't know that a communication link has failed, that's what we are told. Given the current environment, it's not totally unreasonable to think that there could have been a security risk but AA and/or Gov't decided not to create panic and downplay it as an IT problem.
Is it a long shot? Absolutely. Completely unreasonable? Nope.

Note: to keep this thread as useful as possible to today's AA flyers and maintain a factual events flow,
those posts that are merely comments, questions, speculation and unrelated to the current issue will be summarily deleted.
We ask members keep those thoughts until this is over, when the thread will be "unstuck" and no longer as necessary to those flying or planning to fly during the IT outage.
If you have future reservations, try to use aa.com or call the usual numbers if you feel you can not wait - just remember, your call will impact the call volume and affect others who are trying to travel today. If you can't resolve an issue that is unrelated but pending today (book due to deadline for an award or advance purchase requirement, you may want to hold off today and getting accommodated by AA once this is over.
If you are scheduled to fly today, are experiencing difficulties traveling due to the outage, check the wikipost for the OSO number provided there; it is only staffed during Off Schedule Operations times such as this.

My wife and son are heading to airport (MCO) for MIA-MCO-GRU flight. Should they stay home you all think? She is on the 6:20pm flight. The 12pm has not yet left, I doubt all this will be resolved.
Probably not a good place to be with a 1 year old, right? Hotels are probably booked around the area by now.

My flight DFW-LAX 363 just took off. It was around 90 minutes delayed, but we left...

The "voluntary ground hold" has been announced as applying to domestic flights. If they are flying MIA-GRU, that flight may be manually dispatched, as it appears others have as well. The problem may well be the MCO-MIA flight - as they are flying this afternoon, you may wish to try the OSO number listed above, or if they are not far from the airport, try the airport - but it may be chaotic.

Bar on top of the AA website has been updated
American's network system is experiencing intermittent outages. At this time, we are holding all flights on the ground until later this afternoon, when we will provide another update. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as we can, and we apologize to our customers for this inconvenience.
If your travel plans are flexible, there will be no charge if you would like to change your reservation and we will provide full refunds if your travel plans are not flexible. However, we are unable to make changes to current travel plans until we have resolved this issue.
We will provide another update as soon as we have more information.

On the communication side of the house it's a debate Sabre has been having for years with HP ( formally EDS). They own all the hardware associated with it and this is not the first failure of the type. HP has invested relatively little money in this for some time now. I suspect AA will get some compensation from HP around this.

Just off the phone with EXP. They said systems are back up. They are almost at the airport. It should indeed be chaotic. Thanks for the advice!

There's no "may" about it- the ticket counter at DFW C21 was a complete zoo. If you go to the airport, definitely print out your boarding pass beforehand. I walked straight through security, wondering in bewilderment what was happening at the ticket counter....
