First thing that occurred to me. 10% off on all flights trumps 2 AA miles.

Of course, the Costco AA gift cards could vanish tomorrow.

I've been wondering if these new benefits might result in a phase out of the Citi reduced mileage awards (seems possible, and to some extent, not much of a loss since availability was tied to SAAver awards to limited markets) and offseason awards (seems much less likely as this wasn't a benefit tied to holding a Citi card). I have the Citi Visa card and no status other than OW earned through BA, but I still like the idea of these new benefits.

The reservation must include the primary cardmember’s American Airlines AAdvantage® number in order for this benefit to apply. Additionally, benefit is valid on travel booked and ticketed on or after April 2, 2012.

Can we clarify (and hopefully assume) that the $450 a year many of us pay for the Citibank Executive card, will have ALL of these newly announced benefits as well, as one would surely hope AA would reward its MOST loyal customers as well:

The Flight Discount expires one year from date of issue. The Flight Discount is redeemable toward the initial electronic ticket purchase of air travel wholly on flights operated by American Airlines, American Eagle or the AmericanConnection® carrier for itineraries sold and originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. The Flight Discount is also redeemable for air travel on any oneworld® partner or American Airlines codeshare flight. The Flight Discount is redeemable online at www.aa.com. The Flight Discount is redeemable only toward the purchase of the base air fare and directly associated taxes, fees and charges that are collected as part of the fare calculation for travel on American Airlines, American Eagle or the AmericanConnection® carrier. The Flight Discount may not be used for flight products and/or services that are sold separately or non-flight products and/or services sold by American Airlines. If the ticket price is greater than the value of the Flight Discount, the difference must be paid only with a credit, debit or charge card, or with American Airlines Gift Cards. If travel booked with the Flight Discount is cancelled or changed by the cardmember, the Flight Discount will be forfeited and the cardmember will be responsible for any applicable fare difference and the applicable change fee. The Flight Discount will not be replaced for any reason. The Flight Discount is non-refundable, may not be sold and has no cash redemption value. If the $30,000 purchase requirement was met during your cardmembership year and your account remains open for at least 45 days after your anniversary, please allow 8-12 weeks for the Flight Discount delivery.

Earn 10% Back on Your Redeemed American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles

For benefit to apply, your Citi® / AAdvantage® account must be open and active at the time of redemption. The American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles you earn through this benefit will be based on 10% of the total AAdvantage® miles you redeem each month during the calendar year. The maximum number of AAdvantage® bonus miles you can earn annually from this benefit is 10,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles per calendar year, regardless of how many AAdvantage® miles you redeem in that calendar year. This benefit only applies to AAdvantage® miles redeemed from the primary cardmember’s AAdvantage® account. Discover all the ways to redeem AAdvantage® miles at www.aa.com/redeem. Please allow 6-8 weeks after your redemption for the American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles to post to the primary cardmember’s AAdvantage® account.

25% savings on in-flight purchases

Citi® / AAdvantage cardmembers will receive a 25% savings on in-flight purchases of food, beverages, and headsets on flights operated by American Airlines when purchased with their Citi® / AAdvantage® card. Savings do not apply to any other in-flight purchases, such as wireless internet access, SkyMallTM and DutyFree. Offer is available on eligible flights as long as supplies last. Savings will appear as a statement credit 6–8 weeks after the transaction is posted to the cardmember's credit card account. Additional terms, conditions and restrictions may apply. Applicable terms and conditions are subject to change without notice.

Otherwise, it seems a little ludicrous that we're paying almost 6X more for the card listed below, as it wouldn't offer these new bennies as well. AmericanAirlines - please advise....

I understand your potential dismay, but keep in mind that higher-priced cards do not necessarily get all of the perks of lower-priced cards plus additional perks. I have an Amex Plat and would love to get the 3X airfare, 2X gas and groceries the PRG card gets. I don't.

I certainly hope that Citi affords these benefits to Citibank Executive cardholders (I don't hold one so nothing in it for me in making that wish), but I've learned credit card companies can spin some interesting logic in divvying up perks to cardholders of various tiers.

I for one have a keen interest to see how Citi/AA plans to keep me the game at $450 a year. I am all ready to check out when renewal comes for the price tag of the card. I might get to Platinum this year without the 10K EQM spend bonus, which was one of my primary reasons I pursued this card, along with the Gold Lite status, which too, is not a consideration now that my travel is way up.

I guess you're not familiar with the Chase Priority Club Select Visa card. (Priority Club is the hotel points program for IHG, with brands such as InterContinental, CrownePlaze, Holiday Inn, etc.)

You get 10% back on all Priority Club redemptions simply for having the card.

There's obviously a link between Chase and Priority Club which makes Priority Club know that you have the card.

So obviously AA can simply have set up a similar link with Citi.

In other words, what matters is that you have a qualifying card linked to the AA account you booked the miles with.

Well, two of the three AA cards I have already have 2 miles per AA $1 spent for the first 12 months I have the card. I presume this announcement means that I'll continue to have 2 miles per AA $1 spent past that, but it's not absolutely clear.

Also, how do I tell if I have a Visa Platinum Select? I applied with AWAY7 offer a few months ago, and got an Amex and a Visa, and the Amex says Select at the bottom but the Visa just says Platinum Level at the bottom and then Visa Signature a few lines above.

The fact that they are identifying which cards qualify with wording that doesn't match what's on the actual cards makes it confusing IMHO.

(By the way, the Chase Priority Club Select Visa I mentioned in the message above also doesn't say Select on the card itself, but I definitely have a Select card. Does Visa ever put the word "Select" on a card?)

Also, I don't believe the business card qualifies for any of these new benefits.

Here's a question though: If I booked award travel out of my account before April 2, will I still get the 10% bonus? Or does it only apply to award tickets that are booked after April 2?

Also wondering this. I booked a while ago, but don't fly until May. I'm going to be on the lookout for a Business upgrade now, hope to save 10% on that at least.

Wonder if you cancel/rebook a flight reservation, if you can get points back? Spent 280K for 4 tickets to Asia in June. They may charge that over the phone rebooking fee though.

Be very careful! Cancelling an award reservation does not necessarily (immediately or otherwise) put the award availability back into inventory. So I would not necessarily recommend doing this unless you can confirm that you can book another 4 tickets on the same routes before you cancel, since there's no guarantee that if you cancel you'll be able to rebook.

It's usually hard enough getting 4 award tickest once, counting on getting them a second time sounds dangerous to me.

Is all that risk really worth a measly 10k miles? (Remember, the so-called 10% rebate is capped at 10k a year, ie, redeeming anything over 100k earns the same 10k rebate, rather than 10%.)

(Unless each of the four 70k bookings came from a separate account, you can't possibly earn a 28k rebate on a 280k booking, because of that cap, even if you were magically able to cancel and rebook successfully.)

IMHO there are so many easier ways to earn 10k bonus miles, and 10k bonus miles a year does not get you all that far, I don't see it worth jumping through hoops for this. If you have 280k miles to redeem, what comparatively is another 10k here or there? If you don't have many miles to redeem in the first place, 10k may be very signficant to you, but you won't earn it! Catch 22 became catch 10%...

I asked the Citi reps about my specific cards: a couple of them are the usual platinum world mastercards and one is a Visa. The Visa specifically says on the front of it "Visa Signature". It does not say "Select" and it says nothing about "Platinum Level"; it is a really old card though so I don't know about the Visas that have been offered lately. My advice is to call and ask about your cards if you are relying on any of these benefits.

I redeemed 122,500 aa miles (booked round trip ticket to asia next January) a few days ago (on 3/27/2012). Is there anyway I could get that 10% bonus points? Do I have to cancel and the re-book the ticket? (I hope not)

By the way I paid tax and service charge by using my Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Visa Signature card.
