Pretty much this. And LOUD doesn't do justice to it.

I was on a Jazz CRJ a few years ago that was struck by lightning. We were pretty far into our descent to Pearson when we were hit. There was a loud bang and a bolt of lightning (or a flash, at least) went right down the middle of the aisle followed by an acrid smell. One passenger freaked out but the rest of us just looked on calmly. Once at the gate, it took them a long time to get the cargo door shut as it had been welded shut, or so they said. In those days, they still had gate checked bags so we had to wait to retrieve them.

I wasn’t too worried as no aircraft functions seemed to be affected and we landed normally, but once on the ground and having to wait for maintenance it made me wonder what would have happened if one of engines had been hit instead.

Nothing wrong with a panic vector and a TCAS alert.

I sent my ATC buddy the video link. Their reply: "I knew all about that, I was standing right there when it happened. Wasn't a big deal"

Not sure i agree. Wasn't it also in California that AC didn't hear or follow repeat radio call outs to go around, and landed anyway?

We were driving into the YVR Park N Fly (in a hailstorm) when we saw that flash and the aircraft.

Quite the sight!

If the audio is correct, both flights cleared to 5000'.
The SID AA was flying turns slightly inside of the SID AC was flying.
Turning AC further to the left cuts off the AA flight.

AC 548 YVR-EWR is on final at YUL after a diversion. Looks like they diverted quite late. Anyone have an information as to why?

very poor weather / winds at EWR and all NYC area airports

likely had no holding fuel beyond their one attempt and went to alternate

average depaeture delay 310 minutes
arrival rate metered to 26 per hour, favoring long haul int'l

In YYZ TB MLL now and the board is fully lit up in red, all but one NYC area flight out of about 12 shows cancelled.

It's been a crummy day in and out of the US eastern seaboard, darn near continuous moderate turbulence between YYZ and BOS/LGA/EWR and JFK. All of the New York airports were in and out of ground stops/ground delay programs for high winds all afternoon. Throw in a poorly timed ground stop in YYZ for "Runway Maintenance" and yeah just a bad day.

Looks like they'll try and make it to EWR tonight, but if cancelled or a hypothetical, I'm wondering in a case like this if they need to go through customs at YUL?

I've had to leave pre-clearance a few times at YUL and had to go through Canadian customs, but it might have been for logistical reasons ie no way out of transborder without going through customs. They could pull up to a domestic gate.

On the other hand, perhaps transit passengers from other countries were routed atYVR through US customs and didn't have the proper documentation to leave the transit area into Canada.

Any experiences from fellow FT-ers?

That's quite the diversion from the flight planned route.
Which was to go over Chicago, Detroit, then NYC.
https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/ACA548

The flight held SW of DC, then diverted.

As for the passengers. I think Canada lets in more countries than the Americans.
