Though that still wouldn't explain why they wouldn't try to sell some Y to J upgrades.

For those wondering 1788 left today with 15/16 in J and showed “space” in both cabins.

So all makes sense.
Got a gate op-up with m travel companion. Was 15/16 in the end.
Good thing didnt have a LMU option.

Good for you, bad for AC beancounters. As commented upthread if oversold (in Y) why weren’t AC trying to make money from LMUs if they ended up opUping a load of people. Don’t need to open R space to allow LMUs (or process bids) as far as I know?

Would it not be better to take eUps (possibly with a co-pay) than to give it out for free?

RM should have been allowing bids, pushing LMUs and then opening R for any waitlisters. Clearly none of this happened. Worked out well for the op and other people though.

K so honestly I made a booking JUST to see if my LMU offer would be lower than my e upgrade + co pay as just a random booking
E50K
YYC-YWG
FLEX(co pay one, didn't know about this crap)
E ups + $135
Same flight
YYC-YWG
FLEX
LMU $124
...??
also
YEG-YWG
NO STATUS
TANGO CHEAPEST(V)
$99
Go figure .

So a more expensive fare on YYC-YWG has a lower LMU (variable based on all kinds of factors) than the fixed co-pay for your cheaper fare?
And a different route has a different LMU amount?
This isn't really surprising
