So many people have a hate-on for the 777HD, but I thought it was fantastic in PE. From YUL to CDG it was all that was needed for a 7 hour flight and the in-flight service was excellent.
Not everybody has the option to fly in J, and PE on the 777HD is many steps up from any Y class products that Air Canada flies. In fact, the personal space is better than most domestic J products.
If you're not in PE, then well, it's no better or worse than any of the other 10 across 777's out there. This is the future; economy is more cramped, and PE is better than any previous Y products.

(HD defined as 17 - 17.3 width x 31" -or even 30"- pitch in Y).

For that difference in points AS. Save the UA miles for UA metal awards.

I find very little difference between row 18 and those further back on the slaveships. Their toture-like features stem from the seat design, not from the lack of legroom. In fact, the cushion is so short that you tend to slide off it. With a seat in front of you, you can at least jam your knees in the back of the passenger in front, and somewhat forestall your slide. PE seats, if you can get a hold of them, are another story.

Of course; however, I'm 6'0" and legroom is 4th or 5th on my list of complaints about Y seats on the 777HD. Width, lack of foot space, incredibly uncomfortable padding, short seat cushions, and idiotic armrest design, legroom has strong competition for the worst feature title. Granted, it's the one you can do something about.

depends how many points you have. if you have millions, then take the J seat. I don't think UA's J is any better than AC's HD J coffin, though.
