Flight/Origin-Destination: AC846 / YYZ-MUC
Date: 20 November 2011 Cabin: J / Executive First Status: AC*E / Elite Pre departure Was check in quick and efficient? Somewhat. At the priority check-in desks only 4 of the many were manned. The lineup was over 15 minutes for about 5 people queued. And one agent insisted on manning check-in #1 (far left) while the others manned the 3 on the far-right. Did you use priority security (if eligible) and if so, was it quick and efficient? Yes, and yes. Did you use the Maple Leaf lounge and if so, any feedback in regards to service, food and drinks? I did, I used the International MLL upstairs. Service was definitely not over-bearing but the lounge was clean so they must have been doing their jobs well. There were 3 types of pasta and 2 sauces in addition to the normal offerings. They were pleasant, but some variety would be nice. The 3 kinds seemed rather similar. Definitely a step up over the standard food, but the NZ at LAX and SQ at SFO lounges for instance definitely provide better selection. Was priority boarding offered (if applicable to your status) and efficient? Yes, priority boarding was offered and efficient. If there was a delay, did the gate agent provide timely updates? There was a 15 minute delay and I was not informed. Upon asking a few minutes after scheduled boarding time, I was informed I could return to the lounge and my name was taken down. I came back when instructed and boarding began. Onboard - J cabin: Were the crew professional & well groomed? Yes, but see comments below. If there was a delay, were you provided with timely updates? No delays once boarding was complete, and arrival was timely. Was the IFE activated on the ground? Yes. Was a pre-departure beverage offered on the ground? Yes. Did crew offer to hang your jacket? Not Applicable. Were newspapers & menus distributed and meal orders taken (Please specify when meal orders were taken - on the ground or in the air)? Newspapers and menus were distributed on the ground together, and orders were taken shortly after departure. Did crew offer a hot towel prior to the meal service? Yes. Approximately how long after take off did it take for the first meal service to be completed? (From takeoff to all items collected) I didn't time it, however it was at least an hour and a half. Going on two hours, as my movie finished shortly after dinner service completed. How was the quality of all the meals? The salad was nice as usual, as was the bread (although if I recall correctly it was cold). The beef tasted quite pleasant however the presentation left something to be desired. The pecan pie was a bit on the sickly side however that I guess I could have anticipated. Did the cabin crew continiously top up the beverage of your choice throughout the flight? Yes, they did, and the wine selections were very good. I particularly liked the port. Post departure If you have checked baggage, did it arrive within reasonable period of time? Baggage was successfully transferred in under 55 minutes to my LH flight from MUC-VIE. That's no small feat. I was pleasantly surprised. Overall experience/any other comments The flight was quite nice. Food service was sufficient, definitely nothing compared to my Austrian return, but that's to be expected. Austrian is more a floating restaurant, and Air Canada more of a floating hotel :) That said, there's room to improve in entree presentation. On the negative side, I was seated in 8K on the 763, my second favorite seat. Unfortunately, the armrest was somewhat broken (it definitely tilted inward below flush). The seats on this bird definitely felt like they'd seen better days. Not a big deal really but a let-down nonetheless. The 77W I flew YUL-FRA back this summer felt far nicer. Finally, one of the attendants accidentally spilled some wine over the pillow I had at my feet, more or less covering it completely. She apologized profusely and promised to get me a replacement pillow. Then, she disappeared for 10-15 minutes. Then, another attendant came by to serve dessert, and knocked a pecan pie onto the ground right by my wine-coloured pillow. She picked it up and again apologized and disappeared. Accidents happen, I understand, but the real issue for me is that I had to grab my stained pillow 10 minutes after dessert service finished (over half an hour after the initial spillage), go to the galley and ask for a replacement. It was over an hour after the original spillage that the initial attendant asked if the pillow had been replaced. This was quite disappointing service on a red-eye when sleeping is definitely something I wanted to get on ASAP. |

DURING ONBOARD CAFE, HER AND HER COLLEAGUE WERE ALSO TALKING ABOUT AN ASIA RUN THAT THEY HAD DONE AND HOW THE 'ASIANS' WERE RUDE. Overall experience/any other comments THERE WAS A MECHANICAL PROBLEM WITH GETTING THE BRIDGE TO THE DOOR OF THE PLANE. WE WERE DELAYED ON THE PLANE FOR APPROXIMATELLY 20 MINUTES. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've seen this before too. On numerous occasions on flights to Asia the flight attendants treat Asian passengers significantly worse with very little respect compared to white passengers. It seems to be doubly worse if they don't speak English well. For example- on a YVR-TPE flight years ago, wide open, people were moving seats before the flight and the flight attendant scolded quite rudely a number of Asians who tried to do it. When I moved though she actually assisted me. And many other times I've noticed flight attendants speaking subjectively ruder to Asians than to others. Highly recommend Cathay over AC to anyone if the price is comparable, but doubly so if you are Asian. |

N/A - Senator Lounge near B44 is very nice, though - props to LH, as the other LH lounges in FRA I've visited have been small, noisy, and crowded. Was priority boarding offered (if applicable to your status) and efficient? Offered and used, no particular comment. If there was a delay, did the gate agent provide timely updates? No. Minor delay (~15 minutes) was announced late; boarding started ~40 minutes late. Onboard - J cabin: Were the crew professional & well groomed? Yes. If there was a delay, were you provided with timely updates? N/A - no futher delays after boarding. Was the IFE activated on the ground? No Was a pre-departure beverage offered on the ground? For the most part; once I declined a refill, I didn't see the FA again until second meal service; as I stayed awake and working, I would have appreciated more water. Snarl at border control at YYC, with 3-4 flights arriving simultaneously; once through, most luggage (including mine) had been unloaded, so can't speak to timeliness. Overall experience/any other comments Decent enough experience - as this will put me into Elite for 2012 (assuming the missing segment (YYC-FRA on LH, 05/12) ends up being credited), I'm pretty happy. One more flight (YYC-PHX in J) for 2012. |

Yes, but has to fight through the crowd to get there. If there was a delay, did the gate agent provide timely updates? NA Onboard - J cabin: Were the crew professional & well groomed? No. Actually when I hang my jacket on the hanger next to the TV screen, she told me, not very politely, that I was not supposed to do it and asked me to put it up on the overhead bin myself! Yes Post departure If you have checked baggage, did it arrive within reasonable period of time? Baggage handling in HKG is always superb. Priority really arrived in priority. Overall experience/any other comments J services are now hits and misses in AC. Flew YYZ-SYD, YYZ-GVA, YYZ-SEA in J this year. They were excellent. Even 3 hours delay inside the cabin was not too bad because of the excellent crews in GVA-YYZ, but HKG services are subpar in general. Time to try out CX. |

If there was a delay, were you provided with timely updates? N/A - no futher delays after boarding. Was the IFE activated on the ground? No Was a pre-departure beverage offered on the ground? Very fast baggage arrival. Overall experience/any other comments SD offered what is perhaps the best service I've had on AC flight this year, attentive without being intrusive. |

Did you use priority security (if eligible) and if so, was it quick and efficient? Yes, It isn't the best system in YYZ. YVR for instance has a better service as priority line don't merge at the end with regular security (It didn't make that big of a difference at the end). Did you use the Maple Leaf lounge and if so, any feedback in regards to service, food and drinks? Yes. Good wine, olives and ravioli pasta. Was priority boarding offered (if applicable to your status) and efficient? Yes If there was a delay, did the gate agent provide timely updates? 15 min delay but they told me when I checked in at the lounge Onboard - J cabin: Were the crew professional & well groomed? Yes If there was a delay, were you provided with timely updates? Yes, strong wings increased flight time by 40 minutes but pilot kept us informed. Was the IFE activated on the ground? Yes Was a pre-departure beverage offered on the ground? Yes Did crew offer to hang your jacket? No, even though it was obvious I was waiting for it. N/A Overall experience/any other comments It was one of the worst service I have had experience in J. They didn't offer to hang out coats, no white tablecloths, no bread choices, had to ask again for more bread. In addition, when I came to the plane, I had my carry on bag which perfectly fit on the overhead bin but had to ask the flight attendant twice to let me try to put it in as she insisted it wouldn't fit (I proved her wrong!). Air Canada J is a hit and miss. I have had amazing experiences but this was probably the worst. I was expecting a bit more as flight attendants were mature. They were probably not happy to be travelling right around xmas. |

Boarding started exactly on time (18.40) and went very smoothly.
I think the load was light Service in J was not good though There were not more than 10 of us. No earphone pads. When we asked for them, flight attendant said they should be there. Rather insistent, and then found some. SD did the meal service. Very scattered. Canneloni was very cool. Table clothes were left on tables until final approach. I had to ask for tea as it was not offered. Then it was served in a cracked mug. Coats not returned until door opened. SD was very pleasant but just not in gear..... |

With all due respect there was a snowstorm in Toronto. The departing crew on arriving at the takeoff runway deemed the runway conditions to be unsatisfactory and waited for conditions to improve. This required a return to the gate for more fuel and hence your unfortunate delay. Safety is always our primary concern.

Staff at the counter was super friendly. Did you use priority security (if eligible) and if so, was it quick and efficient? The 8:05am departure is great because all the charter flights take off around 6-6h30 am. No one in line at the security... Did you use the Maple Leaf lounge and if so, any feedback in regards to service, food and drinks? Yes. The breakfast selection in the YUL MLL-International is very, very disappointing. You can get plain white or raisin bread. Plain yogurt. Some cereal. Bagel and cream cheese would have been nice. Some fruits as well. Even RCC offers that! On a positive note, the lounge was basically empty (what a change from the 5pm-8pm overcrowded period!) Was priority boarding offered (if applicable to your status) and efficient? Flight attendants were extremely unprofessional and rude to some passengers.There was a family travelling with infants that required some extra attention but most FAs didn't miss a single chance to come over and give them instructions, walking away rolling their eyes and making jokes about them to other customers. I have also heard some very unpleasant comments in French just a foot away from their seats, assuming that this specific family wouldn't understand a word. If there was a delay, were you provided with timely updates? No delays but the captain kept us informed the whole time Was the IFE activated on the ground? Did you use priority security (if eligible) and if so, was it quick and efficient? No lineups at security, so not necessary. Did you use the Maple Leaf lounge and if so, any feedback in regards to service, food and drinks? Yes. It wasn't busy in the lounge today, I had a glass of wine which was good and a glass of water. Didn't try any food or snacks. Was priority boarding offered (if applicable to your status) and efficient? Yes If there was a delay, did the gate agent provide timely updates? Boarded on time. Onboard - J cabin: Were the crew professional & well groomed? Yes. SD was running J, she was very professional and did a good job. If there was a delay, were you provided with timely updates? We had to go to for de-icing and as such took off late. Captain or crew didn't provide us w/ updated arrival times at any time during the flight. Was the IFE activated on the ground? Yes, but the system died during the safety video and had to be reset. It wasn't fully functional again until we were in the air. Was a pre-departure beverage offered on the ground? How was the quality of all the meals? Salad was fresh. Salmon was cooked well, not tough or dry. I've had better, fresher salmon before but for a meal on a plane I would say it was reasonably well executed. Did the cabin crew continiously top up the beverage of your choice throughout the flight? I had an Aussie (Penfold's) Shiraz. It was topped up until I declined. Water glass was topped up regularly throughout the flight. Post departure If you have checked baggage, did it arrive within reasonable period of time? Carry-on only Overall experience/any other comments My first AC J experience in a while (almost a year ago, same route) and I would say it was on par with last time, and was a positive experience - no major complaints. I got an OpUp on a UA flight from NRT-TPE in December (would have much preferred that on the SFO-NRT leg but beggars can't be choosers ;) ) and I think AC's J service is far superior to UA's equivalent in my experience (also the case in Y...). This was my third attempt on a YYZ-SFO (or vice-versa) flight this month to use my eUpgrades and was finally successful (cleared on request at 4 days out). The flight was showing R7 as I boarded and both Y and J were only about half full. Still have lots of credits to burn and a few more flights before end of Feb, so if the stars align I might have a chance to try J again soon. |

N/A Overall experience/any other comments Ron was the SD in J cabin. All three of them Ron, Karen and Michelle (YVR based crew) were superb. 13 pax in J (Y was full) and J service from crew was top notch and one of the best I've experienced. Well done. |
Flight Report for YOW-YYZ-LAX-KOA-ORD-YOW
Back from vacation in Hawaii and wrote up a short trip report for the flights and activities on the Big Island for my new Ottawa-based travel blog, departingyow.ca. Includes some photography as well. Plan to utilize the website for a number of upcoming trips this year including a mini-RTW in business to New Zealand (YOW-YUL-LAX-AKL-NRT-ZRH-YUL-YOW).
I welcome all feedback and comments. Hoping to make it a little funnier for friends and colleagues for the next trips.
