It is a cash+avios which has to be done manually.
Got a email last night to confirm refund (so 8 weeks...). Apparently I'm getting the full cash price of the ticket refunded

Refund applied on May 7th (Avios + Cash)
  • Avios were refunded September 15th and
  • The voucher was sent to me on September 28th
Now all I need is for a reasonable approach to travel to be agreed.

If I cancel my flights, how can I get a voucher? The website only shows the option for a refund request and mentions what tickets aren't eligible for refunds.

EI has been consistently bad with this, they should be ashamed

Other than flights, can vouchers be used for anything else?

Nope, must be used a purchase a flight, they cannot be used to alter a flight or pay for 'extras' unless purchased as part of the initial booking

My September 19th refund applied for on September 16th was made overnight

Yep Aer Lingus are as bad as Ryanair when it comes to refunds. I know numerous people who are waiting months and keep being told 15 business days and nothing ever turns up . They really are shameful .

Given the rather bleak outlook for S21 I'm wondering...if I've already purchased a flight using a voucher can I cancel and elect for another voucher or do the funds just return to the original voucher code? It appears if I rebook for dates beyond 31 Dec 21 I'll incur a change fee which I understand but who knows if we'll be able to fly in 2022! I'd rather sit on my existing credits...( >1500) than continue to incur more charges.

Don't cancel. The chances are high that one or all of your flights will get cancelled, and then you can request a cash refund. EI pays out fast when the flight is cancelled - speaking from personal experience with my cancelled Christmas flights.

I'm not sure I understand the subtlety in the distinction you appear to be drawing between getting another voucher as opposed to having the value return to the original voucher. (If the original voucher was all used up in that transaction - i.e. if you had to top up payment using a credit/debit card - then it's definitely not going to go back to the original voucher). But ultimately, does it matter much?

You should be doing everything in your power NOT to be issued with any further vouchers - so hang on and hope for a flight cancellation instead. Just remember to cancel your ticket in time, should that flight cancellation not happen.

Thanks for the response and apologies for the ambiguity in my original post.

Tbh I've so many voucher numbers and codes some now part used for future flights ideally I want the funds to be re-credited to the original voucher. I'm determined not to spend any more "hard cash" it's probably best to start an .xls to keep my own track! Thanks again for your recommendations.

If you paid with a voucher then the refund on cancellation is going to be either a new voucher or a credit to the existing one

You can only use 1 voucher per booking so you going to need to chase EI support to merge them all together assuming the named passenger is the same. Otherwise it will take you ages to burn through all the value. I've heard of people doing this.

No booking fees if the booking is fully covered by a voucher
