VIP treatment: They usually give you a semi-obscure drink much like the swiss hotel one in the previous post. I was a bit surprised to find this instead:

Turned out to be a mercure water bottle

Reaction: It was ok, the drinks are usually good, but this definitely beats the beetroot drink they offered last time

Hotel: ibis Porto Sao Joao
Status: Gold
VIP treatment:
(1) I booked a standard double room, but we were given a triple room (there's a double bed and a single bed). It's quite spacious. There's even a big desk.
(2) We were brought two small bottles of mineral water, two glasses (not plastic!), and some fruit (2 apples, an orange, a kiwi) + two forks and knives. All served on a decent tray with the Le Club logo.

Reaction: Very surprised, as ibis hotels don't normally offer any VIP treatment.

Well this was different:
Mercure Makkasan (Bangkok) as Plat.
4 night stay upgraded from standard to exec, but it’s the welcome gift I thought was worth sharing. Made me smile; genuine effort made here..
Fruit, cookies and a full range of Fanta! Plus a bonus work of art from the front office mgr.
Welcomed and escorted to room by guest relations mgr, F&B mgr introduced herself at happy hour in the lounge.
Interesting Mercure. 2 years old but still pristine. Price point and my two days so far suggests they struggle for occupancy. Built this property close to Makkasan station, on the airport line, when the station was planned to be a satelite check-in hub for Suvarnabhumi airport. Never happened. So one brand new Mercure, really very nice actually, but now stuck out on a perimeter road with nothing whatsover within a 10 minute walk down a rough old road with no pavement (they have a tuk tuk transfer running throughout day at set times). If you’re ok with the location it’s great value, and as you can see they really try hard.

Just arrived a few hours ago. The welcome amenity is good. Another bottle of champane to store in the home cupboard (not a big drinker plus we have happy hour upstairs if we want plus welcome drinks).

It should indicate that more and more properties are starting to take note of their CRM system called ACDC - just that not enough properties are checking them prior to guest check-in.

I assume of course they are right in that you're a fan of Fanta drinks!

Tris06, if you don't drink much and you rather have something else as a welcome gift, have them put a note in your profile.

We will take some of the bottles back to my wife's hometown for the chinese new year. Having the bottles at home is good for the occasional dinner with friends.
But sadly the drinking culture in China is not the same as western countries. Drinking here is seen as more of a reason to get drunk(or show how much You can drink ) than a drink to relax with friends. Back in Australia it is common people will have a glass or 2 of wine at the end of the day and a good opportunity to chat while drinking.

Haha well spotted. Actually they had definitely read my booking notes, but no it doesn’t mention Fanta. I did ask and the answer was beautifully Thai - “everyone loves Fanta” ...

VIP Treatment: Booked a Fairmont Gold Room, but checked in at the main lobby. During check-in, there was no mention of my status or an upgrade.

I was directed to my room on the 9th floor. For those who aren't aware, the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver recently underwent a $55 million renovation, with all areas getting refreshed. The only area not done is the Gold Floor lounge/rooms, which seems weird. The room was extremely dated and the HVAC was making a strange noise. Gold staff moved our room to the 14th floor, which houses mainly the specialty suites and a few Gold guest rooms, which have been completely (and fantastically) renovated. During the move I asked about status benefits, and the Gold staff apologized and sent up two drink vouchers, but no amenity. When I asked, they said in-room dining was busy and sent up a bottle of water and a few snacks (maybe leftovers from the Gold dessert hour).

Reaction: Really disappointed. Last week we stayed at The Waterfront, and received a bottle of red wine, a beautiful charcuterie board, and a jar of house honey to take home. This was our first stay at the Hotel Vancouver since the merger and it was business as usual - IMO they've consistently been the worst at recognizing elite benefits of the 4 Vancouver hotels.

VIP Treatment: We are frequent guests at this property, and staff know us well. On our last stay they gave us a 'mimosa bar' with a variety of fresh juices, fruit, and a bottle of bubbly. We were also with our dogs, who both got personalized Fairmont YVR scarves.

Reaction: Probably the most thoughtful welcome amenity/VIP treatment we've received. This is one of a few properties where I actually feel like a VIP!

paulkevin - Thank you for your report. I'm thinking of staying here for one night. The price is right! I would be walking from Makkasan Airport Line station to the hotel, arriving at night. How difficult is it to walk from the station to the hotel, I wonder? Thanks..
