Passport Agency Appointments (same day expedited service)
Appointments for same-day expedited service often go quickly. It is best that you schedule your appointment with the passport agency exactly 14 days before your trip. You will want to call the passport number before the center opens at 8am EST as they will have just opened up one day (14 days out) of appointments at all agencies. Appointment times start at 8am. It is important that you have enough buffer in your travel schedule. For example, if you make an appointment for a new passport at 11am and your time of travel is at 2pm, there will not be enough time for you to get your passport. If you book the 8am slot you may have to wait until the end of the business day to get your new passport or it may only be a few hours.

You will want to have your date of travel, time of travel, your flight itinerary number, name of destination, full name of applicant, and applicant's birth city, and the zip code of where you live (to help them find the closest available center with open slots). Use the following steps to increase your chances of success to booking an appointment as they can go very quickly:
  1. 14 days before your trip, you need to schedule an appointment with the passport agency.
  2. At 7:55 am call the passport number 877-487-2778 (This have to be exactly 14 days before your plane ticket or less. If less, it will get harder to find an appointment)
  3. Click 1 (For English)
  4. Click 2 (New Passport)
  5. Continue to Click 7 to repeat, and keep doing this while watching your watch or using Time.gov to get the exact time down to the second.
  6. When your it hits exactly 8:00 am Click 2 (for traveling within 14 days option)
  7. There will be a delay of 3-4 second and you will wait for the next available agent. If you are very lucky, you will be put straight through to an agent. You may be waiting few minutes or maybe as long as 15-20 minutes.
  8. If you did not click 1 exactly at 8 am, you may have to wait for more than an hour and half
After the appointment slot has been reserved you will be provided with a unique identifier code and reservation number. These details will also be emailed to you.

Known office locator numbers (not complete)
Note: The office code (first two digits of your application locator number returned by Passport Status) is the office reviewing your documents and approving your application. It isn't necessarily the address you mailed the forms to (always Irving or Philadelphia for renewals) nor the facility where the book is physically printed and mailed (often Tucson or Hot Springs).

A list of agencies and their locator numbers is listed on this page under the heading, "List of passport agencies and centers with locator numbers."

H/T Nayef, txviking, and various individual posts both here and on Reddit. If you have a locator not in the above list, check the return address agency name or postmark/ZIP on your returned citizenship docs, or passport card if you applied for one, which may be the processing office, although the address itself is likely to be a PO Box in Sterling, VA in all cases (which appears to be a lockbox location that processes mail for all locations). The passport books are printed in fewer locations, often Hot Springs and Tucson, and may not correspond to the agency where the processing steps occurred. If it doesn’t match the list above, please add or correct.

Thank you all for the suggestions above.

Berkeley's earliest appt is now towards the end of Sept, but I was able to get an appointment in Sonoma later this week. I'm not thrilled about taking the kids out of school for 1/2 day for this, but if we can fit in some wine tasting for the adults, I guess it all works out in the end

Reading this thread makes me feel silly that I spent the extra dollars for a expedited service XD Looks like there's basically no difference.

Not at all. B4 COVID normal processing would take 4-6 weeks. Then processing times went out the window with COVID. Now its finally back to normal - and even more efficient (what's the chance IRS will learn from State?). Expedited can definitely help in the right situations but for most people it is probably not necessary.

Hi all my passport is expiring Dec 18, 2023.

I have international travels to Asia and Europe (different occasions until May), and then Canada in July. That’s it!

Should I renew my passport now or wait until after I complete Canada trip and renew? I really don’t have any tips beyond July.

How much time between now and your next trip? There is no telling what the situation will be end of next year and current processing is pretty reliably quick right now. So, if not expecting any travel between now and then, why wait? On the other hand, if you need your passport regularly before May, then I would wait until after all the Canada trip as Canada will probably not have a problem with less than 6 months validity for a US passport.

So why not renew now - before any potential cost increases - and while processing is relatively fast? I would do it now.

And, in the event there is some delay when doing it now - it certainly will be resolved well before your February trip.....

Speedy US passport renewal

If this should be in another forum, please move it.

Prior to the pandemic, I was aware that my US passport would expire in Jan. 2023. Not traveling overseas during the pandemic, I forgot to renew it. After returning from a trip to Canada in September, I applied for the renewal. With no trips planned, I still used the expedited service, just in case. Here's what happened:

9/5: Filled out the renewal form at travel.state.gov, printed the exact form.
9/6: Mailed in with USPS Priority Mail.
9/13: Checked the status at the site, and requested update by e-mail.
9/17: Received e-mail confirming application received and in review.
9/19: Received e-mail notifying new passport will arrive on or around 09/22/2022.
9/21: Received new passport.

I think that filling out the form online and submitting the exact form made a difference.

Funny - I saw that and thought to myself, "Why nt do it after July?" Canada requires a US passport to be valid for the length of a trip so there is no problem in using a December 2023 expiry passport to enter Canada in July, 2023. Also, if one gets a new passport a year early that's like a 10% increase in cost, likely negating any potential cost increase in obtaining one before next July. Finally, the pandemic-related delays in passport renewal seem to be over already. That's not what the passport office is telling people but is the reality of what people in this thread have been reporting .

Was able to renew myself using the online mytravel.state.gov service...

9/3: Submitted (large book, standard processing)
9/16: upgraded to expedited (trip coming up)
9/22: shipped USPS Priority mail.

Maybe the upgrade was unnecessary, I did it anyways.

Also, I guess I should hole punch my old passport so I don't use it by accident LOL.

Not so sure it was unnecessary - I submitted online 8/2 for standard processing, 8/3 check cashed - over 6 weeks later no progress "in process" despite my saying I have a trip on 10/10

Agreed! But OP seems to have anxiety about the process which is why I suggested doing it now while one can pretty decently know what to expect. Yes, a year early is a 10% lost, but that's also only about $13 at current costs - or just 3 gallons of gas.

I applied and was accepted into the online renewal program.

Uploaded the completed form and picture (from my iPhone) on Friday. Paid for "Expedited" service (6-8 weeks I think instead of 12-15 or similar) but not the expedited delivery.

Had the passport book in hand by the following Thursday. The passport card came the next day.

There was a warning when uploading the picture that their AI thought I was wearing glasses (wasn't, just a shadow) so really expected a bit of a delay.
