Wiki note about the forum’s several, active “Channel 9” threads.

Offering live ATC communications on UA flights on Chanel 9 of the audio entertainment system (“Channel 9”) is exclusive to United and offered at the Captain’s discretion. This forum has four prime, active threads about Channel 9. This note will guide you to the right thread for your post, or to where you would look for those channel 9 posts you’re interested in.

1) This thread, to discuss interesting things heard on Channel 9, such as interesting exchanges between pilots and controllers or asking about pilot-controller phraseology.

2) A thread – intended as a basic status thread only to list the specific channel 9-equipped flights offering or not offering Channel 9. The thumbs-up/down codes used in the thread are:
^ Channel 9 offered on this flight but no announcement made about it.
^^ Channel 9 offered and crew announced or promoted its availability.
: td : Channel 9 not offered on this flight.
Please postings to status reports of availability -- and use the thread below to discuss the general topic.
Channel 9 availability reports (no discussion)[Consoldidated]

3) A discussion thread to pursue issues about Channel 9 availability. (See the previous paragraph. if you merely wish to list the flights offering or not offering channel 9.)
Consolidated "Channel 9 Availability" Discussion Thread [Merged]

4) A thread to discuss United’s progress in converting legacy Continental aircraft to offer Channel 9.
Anyone get channel 9 on a reconfigured CO or PDE aircraft yet?

The following aircraft types have "From the Flight Deck" installed (commonly known as "Channel 9," as that's the location it is found on audio handset selectors):
sUA 777-200ERs
sCO 777-200ERs
sUA 777-300ERs
sUA 777-200As (high density, first class only)
sUA 767-300ERs
sCO 767-400ERs
sUA 757-200 (28J p.s.)

[sUA A320 and A319 aircraft have had it removed. It is not installed on any 737s, 787s, nor sCO 757-200s (16J p.s.) or sCO 757-300s.]

The Moderators may move misplaced posts to conform to these thread aims.

On Saturday there was bad weather between DEN-SFO and a Cessna was forced to make an emergency landing on a dry lake bed to get out of the weather and wait it out. They couldn't reach ATC from their location. A United pilot relayed messages back and forth between ATC and the Cessna to notify ATC that the Cessna was making an emergency landing, their approx. location, and later that they were okay and to pass on a message to their family that they were going to be several hours late. ^

Thats correct. Royal Jordanian just spent a fortune installing new horse carriages on all their aircraft.

Flew UA387 DEN to SLC on 9/21. I dozed most of the flight, but as we started down just east of Provo I heard ATC call out to us with "Priority Approach." The Capt acknowledged then asked where our escort would be waiting.

I got a little nervous wondering what was up. Right after this exchange the Capt announced to the pax that we would have a police escort to our gate in honor of the more than 30 soldiers on board returning from an 18 month tour in Afghanistan.

We turned off the runway and had 8 police cars and trucks with lights flashing escort us across the field to our gate. All of the pax waited in their seats while the soldiers deplaned to applause. The soldier behind me left a wife who was four months pregnant and was very excited about meeting his year old daughter. It was pretty amazing.

You know, I saw a similar thing the other day at IAD... a flight was escorted on taxi out by several police cars, then made the turn to head to the runway, and the cops peeled off. Wonder if it was for a similar reason? Ch9 was unfortunately at the time interrupted by the FA's blah-blah-blah, so I couldn't tell what was up from there.

Question channel 9 on channel 10

ua 1148, lax-sfo today (sept 30th) seat 4a had music on ch9 but the flight deck on ch10 .

very bizarre as i flew the very same a/c today bos-lax as ua 163 and in seat 5c and ch9 was on ch9. but wait, it gets better......on 1148, i was originally in seat 4b but took the window as first went out only half full and was bummed when i heard music on ch9 so i decided to see what else was on and changed channels. it's a good thing i changed channels up vs down as when i changed to ch10, there was the flight deck . but wait, it gets better.....i was curious so i plugged my headphones back into my orignal seat of 4b and ch9 was on ch9. no it was not due to my lack of sleep from my w/e in bos and goalie not quite being awake-ch9 was on ch10 in seat 4a and ch9 was on ch9 in seat 4b.

As we approached ORD on Sept 27th around 8:30 AM CDT, our plane was told to slow the approach because there was a coyote on the runway. Eventually, it was corraled by the police but it was pretty interesting. On pilot commented "where is Michael Vick when you need him"

Here's an atc recording where you don't know whether to laugh or be scared if you are on a plane:

LaGuardia departure control

No UA flights mentioned in it, so not ratting on anyone.

Yesterday (10/1) on UA658 SNA-ORD I was in 4C and had music on 9 and couldn't find the flight deck anywhere.

In Denver Center's (ZDV) airspace, yesterday late afternoon, lots of pilot requests for the updated Rockies - Padres score. One controller reported the score as DEN ahead 3-0. Then a pilot jumped in with an update: SAN ahead 5-3, to which the ZDV controller replied, "I hate you." -- Just a part of the good-natured bantering between pilot and controller.

Things NOT heard on Ch 9...

I was coming home from a wonderful HKG trip on UA 862 yesterday, and the pilot announced in the preflight briefing that channel 9 was available and gave the usual invitation to listen in. However, it was complete silence until (according to the IFE map) we crossed into Japanese airspace -- at which point Ch 9 went from silent to quite lively.

Does Chinese law forbid Ch 9? Are there any other countries / jurisdictions that prohibit Ch 9 from being turned on?

I've had Ch 9 on HKG-SFO continuously starting at the gate in HKG, including Vietnamese airspace. I've also had Ch 9 all the way into the gate on an inbound HKG flight, and out on a HKG-SIN departure -- I'm 3/4 for it on the ground in HKG, and the time it was no on there, it was off for the entire flight.

Edit: Obviously HKG-SFO did not transit Vietnamese airspace, but HKG-SIN and SIN-HKG flights did.

On my SFO-HKG, there was no Ch 9 at any time during the flight -- but there was also no invitation to listen to Ch 9, and the captain did not speak to us at all (only the first officer). So I didn't expect it then. But when the captain on HKG-SFO invited us to listen, I was expecting to hear it, and then unpleasantly surprised when it wasn't there for quite a while. Oh well...better luck next time, I guess.
