It will still be around. Capt. Denny (Ret) will be travelling from time to time. He often has speaking engagements. He is always happy to meet FlyerTalkers when he's on the road. I think it would be fun to sit next to him on a flight. ^

Thanks for sharing! Denny's family compiled a video from Monday and Tuesday - I asked them to please share with us once they've had time to recover from this past week.

Indeed today is Captain Denny's birthday. I was able to talk with him to wish him a happy birthday. He was planning to spend the day surrounded by family and friends in a celebration of his birthday and retirement.

Happy birthday, Denny!

Even though I've missed the chance to flight with him, I hope he does stick around. It'd be great to meet him.

They added his final flight mini video to the bottom of the article. About a 1min 27sec video.

I'm a big-softy for these sort of life moments. teared up watching the short vid.. moreso because I'm aware of how tumultuous 30 years at United may have been, with bankruptcy, union issues.. changes in leadership .. some good and lots bad, and mergers along the way.

Capt. Flanagan's unwavering customer service and attention to the flyer is awe-inspiring and rare. Just wish we had more UA employees like Denny that appreciate the customer!

It is so very true. When I pass the video along to others, I tell them that he did this for every flight--the gate announcements, greeting at the door, etc.--not just for his retirement flight. That is even more impressive to know it was done for 30 years.

I still remember my first flight with CAPT Denny some 10 years ago. When he grabbed the microphone to give us the pre-flight brief, I thought, wow, this must be his last flight or something. Then he greeted us at the door, and then kept us informed throughout the flight. I quickly noticed how his optimism affected the cabin crew - they clearly liked working his flights. When I got to talk to him on later flight, I could tell he wasn't putting on an act, but that he believed in what he was doing.

Since then I've been lucky enough to encounter a few other UA pilots that take the time to walk out of the flight deck and thank passengers for their business. It really does matter, and it's a shame more of them don't do it.

Yes! I know they've got a lot on their hands (and minds) to get ready and settled for the flight, but this really does make a difference. Had a recent American Eagle (Compass) flight where the captain came out and used the FA's PA for his preflight speech. Sure felt different and more personal to see a face rather than just a disembodied voice.

final flight photos

Here are some more belated photos from the final flight.

EDIT: I don't know why the thumbnails are so low-res and I don't have time to figure it out. Click on them to see them in their proper glory.

Great photos! That's the first time I saw a picture of the cake on the plane.
