Only short-haul DEN to/from hub flights have the pizza margherita. It's business as usual for ORD-EWR/LGA.

Yep, same thing happened. No pizza today, just a sad snack basket.

I remember (and miss) back in the late 2010s when "snack" on United meant a light cold meal such as a noodle dish, and the snack basket was coded as "Refreshments"
Indeed, BOS<>ORD was a "BusinessOne" flight that had enhanced service, including a newspaper!

And Business One flights were guaranteed to fly out of the close-in ORD B concourse (vs B or C).

In Japan, JAL serves full hot meals in F on every flight between Tokyo (HND) and Osaka (ITM) -- 45 to 50 minutes in the air. (I think it's around 280 miles, IIRC.) And also at least two rounds of drinks (sometimes three).

Many years ago, I remember British Midland flying LHR-AMS - 231 miles - and being served drinks before dinner, a hot dinner and drinks, and these were followed by coffee and liqueurs. All cleared away before landing.

SYD-CBR on Qantas--147 miles. Quality hot breakfast and post-meal tea. This is the way.

I flew LAX-DEN this week and was offered a hot breakfast croissant that wasn't half bad (probably a carb and salt bomb, but I digress). Then today I flew DEN-LAX and was offered the margherita pizza which was... okay. I like being offered a hot item, but this one needs a little more work.

In both cases, the hot item was followed by the usual snack basket, seemingly with all the same usual items except I didn't see any fresh bananas which often used to be my go-to.

I had the pleasure of experiencing this last year… though of course, the Asian airlines are also more generous with staffing. For the 12 F seats on the ITM-HND flight, JL staffed 2 FAs. But at the speed at which the fairly senior FAs assigned to F (who were amazing), one of them could have handled the job. Probably not possible in the US though…

How were they served? Is the pizza in a box?

I flew LAX-DEN a few days ago. I say the margherita pizza on the app as the meal. I thought that was curious. In flight though, nothing was offered. Just the snack basket.

BA does an outstanding job in J class for short hauls. Flew CDG-LHR last year in J. Full meals with PDB. A+. Why can't UA do the same?!

Yes, in a little cardboard box.

They could, but they choose to make their meals as cheaply and as unappetizing as possible, because their cabins are still full.
