Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

There's usually no tube or bus service on Christmas day and reduced services other days. Keep a close eye on the TFL website.

OT. Here is the service updates from TFL for December 24th 2021 thru January 3rd 2022.

Travel changes and information

Between Friday 24 December 2021 and Monday 3 January 2022, planned work, closures and service changes may affect your journey.

The only transport running on Christmas Day will be taxi and private hire services, Santander Cycles, coaches and Dial-a-Ride (for registered members only).

During the Christmas and New Year period, there are likely to be changes to timetables on all TfL services. Details will be available nearer the time.

Let's return to our regularly scheduled UA programing.

I talked to GS, and they said it's been this way for a while and there's no information on fares coming down to normal levels (~$5K-$7K). I'm looking at going via LH/LX over Europe, and even SQ via JFK-SIN non-stop or JFK-FRA-SIN. Both those options are $6K-8K. Looks like I'll choose one of those.
Have you looked at TK flights via IST? I found reasonable J fares ($3300 - $3500 RT) from about every TK USA gateway. If you end up with long IST layovers, TK will provide a hotel room for a 9+ hour layover in J. Granted, a long layover, even with a hotel is not ideal, but it helps.

With the US opening up to UK and EU travelers in November, I am surprised that United hasn't increased its frequency (especially from LHR) and added nonstop destinations (such as Denver) to the schedule. However, the reason might be staffing. I was flying last week from SFO/LHR and the flight attendant was telling me how many LHR-based attendants have retired or left employ during the Covid period. She said that they probably just didn't have the staffing to increase the schedule especially very quickly.

Anyone know any different? We're traveling to the US for Thanksgiving on less than optimal flights and still hoping that UA might add a flight or two and possibly Denver to the options.

That can't and won't. Staff has already bid on November routes and Thanksgiving TATL travel is historically very low anyway ... no reason for UA to add more.

Not at all surprised, but I just saw that our early Dec UA984 CDG-SFO nonstop was replaced by CDG-EWR-SFO (both 787-10s). Our UGs were preserved and there's plenty of time to clear immigration/customs in EWR, so I probably won't pursue the other alternatives.

Maybe UA is closely monitoring potential effects of Delta Plus variant growing in UK. Might be related might not be related, but just an observation

For the last couple of years, it was always the case where UA reduced frequencies to/from Europe to add capacity for domestic flights. This is because Thanksgiving is mainly celebrated in the United States and there is additional demand for high priced US domestic tickets during that period. Most people in the US doesn't have proper holiday time other than Christmas, Thanksgiving and their 14 day annual off so it allows UA to overprice domestic routes during that period which generates them extra money.

UA schedules are typically driven by US passenger demand - and the new normal for now - cargo.

Or a lack of crews staffed by folks who haven't (yet) retired..

Got dealt a big blow for December travel. I need to be in Paso Robles so I paid a substantial premium for EWR-LAX-SBP with EWR-LAX in Polaris. UA has axed LAX-SBP so I was rebooked EWR-DEN-SBP with DEN-SBP on a CRJ-200 as a fun bonus.

Looks like I can either deal with that or fly EWR-SFO-SBP and arrive five hours after I planned to. What a pain.

several of the EWR-DEN frequencies operate on 757 with the lie flat Diamond seat… not Polaris but could be worse.

Any options for EWR-SFO-SBP or EWR-<LAX/SFO>-SMX?
