Reimbursement for overnight costs due to schedule change
Hi,
We checked in online the night before our flight and were told we needed to be reissued return tickets because the itinerary had changed.
It now included an overnight in Houston. We were told we could go to the feedback site of United and be reimbursed for costs. Hotel, dinner, bag check in.
But United said no, they change flights due to Covid. I feel they told us too late. Any reason to pursue this or are we just out the money?
Thanks.

It sounds like you found out about a problem on your return trip during check-in for your outbound trip? If that's the case, I wouldn't expect UA to provide any reimbursement.

If I understand your situation correctly to match jsloan's recap above, one thing you may want to try is searching for a new, one way flight booking on any return date that works for you. Look to see if there is something that fits your schedule without the overnight. Then you can call to ask to be changed for no charge. That said, if the re-accommodation gave you an overnight, there may simply be no options for getting from your A to your B in one day.

It is highly unlikely that UA will reimburse out-of-pocket costs for this change. In pre-pandemic times, it might have offered a very small voucher, but even that is unlikely these days.
Without knowing your routing, if there is anything reasonable on UA which gets you home without an overnight, UA will do that.
As others note, this is often covered by your travel insurance and it is worth looking at your policy to determine whether it is covered (do not rely on phone agents to determine coverage).

It would be useful to better understand what happen.
Was this all UA flights? Did you check in with UA or a partner airline?
What was the total itinerary?
Did you learn of this change before flying the outbound portion? How long was it until return?
Did you discuss with UA alternative flights for the return after the change?

It sounds like there may have been an advance schedule change involved for the return flights that OP was unaware of because notification somehow fell through the cracks. As noted above, they generally do not re-imburse in the case of advance schedule changes. It would be helpful to know when and what the return segments involved were.
