Not quite as excited as I was when I first read about this...
Can we get clarification that this will be extended next year? or is this just 6 months

My guess is that the economics make this a closer fit than you think.

Ugh, while I rarely fly UA anymore, however I still stay mostly at Marriott. And I thought the lounges were getting over crowded when they started selling lounge access to general guests, now its going to be even worse.

I'm curious is Marriott Lifetime Plat will get matched to UA silver. It will be nice to still be able to get a free bag once my UA status expires, in the event I fly them again.

I'd be willing to bet that if anyone has platinum status with Marriott and gets from hotel to hotel by flying (not someone who drives a sales territory) that they will already have at least silver status on some airline. I don't think it will hurt UA flyers.

I am excited for this benefit, as I fly enough to make status, but never stay in the same hotel consistently enough to get anywhere useful. So when I happen to stay in a Marriott (which is later this month!) I'll get treated nicely. Yay.

Nice perk for Mileage Plus members. Too bad I just kissed Marriott off after a series of really disappointing stays.

Like it a lot, especially since I just booked a Vacation with UA Vacations to the Ritz Carlton in SJU. Seems like I had MR membership since 97, but had zero points. Do they expire? Is there a possibility this status might be reflected by this coming Sunday?

From the website FWIW...

Thank you for registering. We are verifying your request for complimentary Marriott Rewards Gold Elite status.

Once your request has been verified please allow 7-10 business days for your Marriott Rewards account to be updated.

It's a recurring deal, says USA Today

UA and Marriott gave USAT's Nancy Trejos an advance briefing on the news. From the story:

Travelers who link their accounts will have until Jan. 31, 2014, to use their benefits. As long as they keep their travel up and meet eligibility requirements for their particular tier on the original partner, Marriott and United will renew their reciprocal status each year.
I know the reporter--we used to work together--and I trust her to get this detail right.

A good deal, at least for me. No prob signing up on-line. The system immediately recognized both my current MR silver and UA status.

Wow! I'm really happy with this announcement. I've enjoyed staying in Marriotts in the past, and this might be enough to push me over to them more than Hilton, which has been disappointing recently.

It's pretty sad when every new announcement hint breeds suspicion and angst, and the actual announcement is nothing more than a sigh of relief. I don't think that's the type of marketing hype most companies are trying to achieve.

While we did avert disaster, can someone explain to me how this is any different than a knee-jerk reaction to Delta's SPG partnership? Is UA marketing doing nothing more than cherry picking and copying competitors now? No new innovation?
