Older Updates -- DEL "Cancellations" extended thru end of July 2019 (although Travel Alerts still refers to July 2)

Was "announced" in the Q1 earnings conference call today this would be extended to 2 July 2019, the data in "Travel waivers" has not been updated.
DEL service suspended until July
Due to seasonal winds and the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, we’re currently unable to operate our flights between New York/Newark (EWR) and New Delhi (DEL) while meeting crew flying time requirements. Beginning April 5, in order to minimize the inconveniences for our customers, we will suspend the service until July 2 for eastbound flights and July 3 for westbound flights. We’ll continue to closely monitor this situation and remain in contact with U.S. government authorities and our international partners. We’re also reaching out directly to our customers booked on these flights to provide alternative travel options, including rebooking on other airlines or offering full refunds. We will continue to operate our nonstop flights from New York/Newark to Mumbai (BOM).

Pakistan claims two IAF fighters down; India acknowledges loss of one aircraft and claims to have shot down a Pakistani aircraft. It's all a mess: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/27/w...-aircraft.html

There are plenty of established news sources covering these recent events

And there are a couple of FT threads to discuss the issues related to these events
Renewed hostilities between India and Pakistan
Pakistan vs India tension again

And threads for other carriers, such as
Extended BA flight times due to conflict avoidance [Pakistan airspace closure]
Thai suspends Thailand-Europe flights temporarily

Destination forums
AFPAK air space closed effective 27FEB2019
Renewed hostilities between India and Pakistan

So, just a reminder, we will focus in the UA forum just on the aspects of how this impacts the UA traveler and how UA is handling the situation

Given the hostilities, I really wouldn't want to fly over Indian airspace right now either.

The new routing has the airplane in Frankfurt and also tonight's Newark flight (scheduled now to stop in Stockholm to refuel presumably), overfly Russia all the way to Irkutsk/ Baikal, then turn south-southwest over Mongolia and China, crossing into India at the India/ Nepalese/ Chinese border. Wild routing. Lots of interesting territory not on any usual transatlantic flight plan.

... Might be quicker to route via Narita looking at the distance.

Those on UA82 diverted to LHR would have fared better. The UK authorities grant transit without visa (land side) to those with US Visas or Green Card holders flying from the US. They would have made it land side for one night while UA rebooked them using one of the many non stop or one stop routes to DEL.

Is there one in the transit area? The only hotels connected to the FRA airport that I am aware of are the Sheraton, the Hilton and the Hilton Garden Inn. And they are all land-side.

answer: yes. https://www.mycloud.de/de/startseite/

Looks like they're currently planning to try again tomorrow with the BOM flight:

...but no dice on DEL:

What do they do in this situation? Hold them at the airport? Expedite visas? Send them somewhere else?

According to upthread, they put them in a transit hotel (in the transit area) and sent them out to India on other flights the next day.
