AFPAK air space closed effective 27FEB2019 [re-opened 16 JUL 2019]

It seems the entire FIR above Afghanistan and Pakistan is closed. https://twitter.com/flightradar24/status/1100671221686042624?s=19

After initial chaos:

https://twitter.com/flightradar24/status/1100646637159018498?s=19

Things have settled down, but all of the traffic usually going over there to South China and south east Asia is now squeezed south of Mumbai

Yeah and they shut down airports around J&K today etc. Hopefully things will normalize soon.

The shutdown airports within India went beyond just the airports in J&K(&L).

VIAR (Amritsar), VIPK (Pathankot), VISR (Srinagar), VIJU (Jammu) .... list of shut down included Indian airports beyond just those in J&K.

Yups. And PAK shut down their entire airspace. So flights had to India and SE Asia had to be rerouted causing major delays.

Most of my international flights to/from DEL go via Pakistani airspace.

I would have to assume some segment of the US/Canada non-stop flights to India don’t work so well without access to Pakistani airspace.

Yes a whole bunch of them landed in EU yesterday. UA EWR-DEL landed in LHR. UA EWR - BOM landed in FRA. AC YYZ-DEL I think turned around and went home.

The PAK airspace is closed today as well. That will disrupt things even more.

It’s especially worse for the US airlines who aren’t supposed to fly over IRN airspace already. They really have to take a circuitous route.

The link doesn't work for me, so I'm going to try the quote trick.

Added: Now it works.

I'm flying with AI to India tomorrow, it seems after the initial shock and 3-6 h delays things are finding order, hopefully they have a half way decent schedule rythm by tomorrow evening. I'm certain Asian and European airlines are putting significant pressure on PK to reopen their FIR ... its also a significant income for them.

More bad news & chaos: PAK air space closure extended till 04MARCH, 2019, 0800UTC.
I wonder how many airlines are NOW going to suspend services in coming days...

Western carriers are assuming this will last all of March and are planning accordingly. Pakistan has opened the airspace for domestic flights on certain routes and is allowing international flights bound for 4 cities into the country.

Yes, indeed bad news or overland traffic.

The unmass detours means loss of revenues to airlines.....translating to more fuel costs, etc, etc., and eventual suspension of flight sectors..
