For future reference I'm not sure if you booked W intentionally or that was the lowest available
Domestically you can be in any fare class except basic and can
use an rpu instead of a GPU

Thanks. When I was on the phone with an agent (we needed to cancel a previous flight and change for family medical reason) they indicated that SFO-EWR was more stringent than typical domestic, and that she had GPU space but no RPU available. W fare was $278/pp so entirely reasonable.

2. 28 August
3. Booked 23 August
4. W
5. Y --> C
6. Cleared at booking
This itinerary was purchased three months ago. I saw PZ1 this afternoon and decided to upfare from K to W. I saw PZ1 yesterday morning but did not call 1K line right away. It disappeared in about one hour when I got to my office. Today, the 1K agent checked PZ space before she upfared my ticket, but it disappeared before she finished the change from K to W. Eventually, her supervisor or someone else opened a PZ space for me and I got a Polaris seat. (Common sense prevailed; 😀 there are still 15 unsold Polaris seats within T-5 days). The duration of this call was, unfortunately, very long; 1 h 19 m.

5. Two months in advance
6. Despite J being largely empty at time of purchase for outbound and inbound.. Forgot that computer tries “all or none” upgrades and probably missed out on many chances early. Finally split record 2 and 3 at T-2 days and confirmed two seats. The other two didn’t confirm until the gate.
Return - all 5 cleared during our outbound trip, one week in advance
Lesson: don’t forget to split if needed!

The outbound from SFO-TLV also cleared into Premium Economy on October 9th, but I'm probably going to remove it if it doesn't clear into PZ
