Watching Baby Driver right now on IFE. Completely uncensored and lots of profanity. Still finding this situation with Three Billboards bizarre.

Second this. Audio is only for the person wearing the headphones, it shouldn't matter. Video is for everybody nearby. I don't know the scene you're talking about (I'm not much of a movie watcher) but it doesn't sound like something that should be up on screens that can be seen by others. I think what's going on is that it's much easier to censor audio than video and $ are overriding sensibility. They can say the movie is "censored"--but in reality they did nothing about the problem.

Considering the video screens are private in Polaris with little chance anyone else can see it, and zero chance anyone can hear it, it doesn't make any sense at all to censor the movies up front - maybe in the back you can make a case for graphic or sexual scenes due to the lack of privacy, but certainly not for audio either way. Plus, anyone in the back can just bring their own uncensored version on a personal device, and unless it's pornographic, no one really has the right to stop them from watching it. 99% of people in Polaris are adults - why not treat them as adults? This sort of nonsense reminds me of my years in Melbourne FL during the late 80s where our cable TV came from Orlando and everything was censored, even the word 'damn', and many an episode of the Golden Girls was missing dialog or certain scenes

I was shocked at the nudity in coach when I went to watch Ballers a few years back. had to change it as everyone can see your screen.

Not true, I always see kids in Polaris. IIRC, the IFE has a kids mode or something so it’s not like kids can accidentally stumble onto an R rated movie.

3 billboards is just a popular movie. Many movies have grossly edited content. They actually have to display an informational message "this movie has been edited from its original..." it then states either formatted for the screen or format AND edited for content.

I've even seen edited content for popular movies change to non edited content over time. Nice Guys was heavily edited much like 3 billboards for the first couple months it was available bit then the unedited version popped up.

Wolf of Wallstreet is another heavily edited one, and I believe even has pixilated boobs for scenes that couldn't cut the boobs entirely.

Wait, wait, wait... You're seriously telling me that "a couple" shares pornographic material with your 10 year old son... And you didn't press charges? Yeah I'm throwing the shenanigans card here.

By the way, this is a completely different issue than the original posted issue. See, one is offering unedited content for reasonable adults to enjoy (or not) and one is an actual crime.

What I’m curious about is that “warning” they have at the beginning...something about being aware of who is around you? That wouldn’t matter to me one bit. Not my problem (don’t look at my screen!)
But if someone complains their blossom child can see Khaleesi’s breasts, does anyone have the aurhority to make me stop watching?

I would hope that your own decency, common sense and courtesy for others will make you stop watching it.

It's the soccer mom's responsibility to make sure her delicate flower doesn't stare at other people's computer screens which are none of their business....it's not my responsibility to self-censor my viewing material because other people cannot mind their own business. Granted, I am not going to watch pornography or something with constant, excessive gore in the first place, but we need to draw a line somewhere - simple nudity or the level of violence you might find in a PG13 to light-R rated movie should be perfectly acceptable. There are soccer moms out there who would object to their delicate flowers watching Star Wars of all things - should I be told not to watch Star Wars because a nearby soccer mom objects? Where is the line drawn?

Maybe some restraint would be wise when flying certain international routes, no?

I seem to recall a thread (on the BA forum?) where someone was sitting by someone watching hardcore pornography on their phone, so ripping out IFE is not necessarily a solution to avoiding content spillover. While I've experienced someone with the volume high enough to hear their headphones frequently on public subways and buses, I haven't yet encountered it on a plane. I usually am annoyed rather than offended, and comfort myself with the thought that my annoyance is temporary, but their hearing loss is forever.

Also, I'm curious, if you turn on the subtitles, how is that censored?

When I fly United I try real hard to turn off the IFE so I don't have to watch it, but it is irritating when someone has the volume loud enough that others can hear it. And especially if the IFE is on the seatback screens and someone in your aisle is watching something that offends you, simply ignoring it is not real easy to do.

Years ago, because of a strike by UA pilots we were forced to go on an alternate flight from what we were scheduled for. We ended up in IAD for an LAX flight and my kids were split up away from us. As chermog just posted, pull the IFE out, keep channel 9 to hear the pilots talk, and let other people entertain themselves as they wish to.
As others have pointed out, unless you are 3 inches from the guy next you who has the volume all the way up, you most likely won't hear it. I don't think there is much of a reason to edit out language (which UA always does) but Zero Dark Thirty was shown with no edits for violence, which may offend some. In addition, UA actually encourages you to BYOD so the issue with nudity and violence is not resolved this way.

It should be the responsibility of the parent to turn on parental controls on the IFE instead of me not being able to watch a movie because someone is offended by it.
