Where this occurred at 30,000 feet, perhaps the birds had their oxygen masks on which obscured some of their their vision and they didn't see the plane?

If you view the track log, the pilot changed direction at around 3.36am after take off at 3.12am (both times EDT as reported on FlightAware). So that's 24 minutes into the flight, not 90 (the entire flight SFO-SFO was 1hr20). It was cruising at 30,000 feet though when it started the diversion.

So ... you're saying ... it was not a flock of Ruppel's vultures they hit?

What’s not flyer friendly about trying to get pax out as soon as possible? UA obviously tried to either (a) repair the aircraft, or (b) source another.

Stuff happens. I was on DEN-LHR a few weeks ago that returned to DEN due to a medical emergency, then canceled 3 hours after the return. UA didn’t deviously keep pax at the gate just to spring a surprise. They tried to get the aircraft in shape to fly (it landed heavy) and the delay meant recatering. All that pushed the FAs out of hours. They did their best to get people to LHR as quickly as possible, just as they tried to get these pax to SIN ASAP. That it didn’t work out wasn’t for the lack of trying.

Would that mean a/c maintenance out of FRA, followed by the diversion to ORD due to crew timing out?

Surprised by the 773 issues given the fleet age of about 2 years or newer.

UA128 GIG-IAH 763 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance
UA82 EWR-DEL 772 diverted to LHR and cancelled due to operations

UAs long-haul operations have been in ridiculous shape again lately ... hoping my flight tomorrow is operating ... may re-book on LH.

I was on UA82, they said it was due to a sick passenger. We were over the Nordic region and then turned back to LHR, they dumped fule and then we landed right away with no holding. Was on the phone after touchdown and booked LHR-FRA-BLR for tomorrow, but the agent at transfers was able to get me on to BA119 direct today. I am a 1K ticketed in business (P) and reboooked in business (J). Agent came and got what I assume were the GS and they left in a car, assume they were rebooked while we still in the air.

UA102 IAH-MUC 763 cancelled due to aircraft maintenance

I was on this flight multiple times yesterday.

Went something like this:

1. On plane, all seems fine, push back from gate, but don't start taxiing.
2. Pilot indicates one of the 2 flight computers is busted, they are getting a replacement, ETA 45 mins.
3. 1.5 hours later, Pilot indicates multiple computer swaps were not successful, start disembarking plane.
4. Mass of people trying to get re-booked or see what options there are. An hour later all of a sudden they are ready to board again.
5. Flight takes off, no issues.
6. 30 minutes in, plane makes a turn, pilot announces 1 of the 2 flight computers isn't working again and something else is overheating.
7. Land without issue and met at the runway by emergency services.
8. Wait 30 minutes on the runway while they check the brakes and plane.
9. Get to gate, everyone rebooked on an additional flight the next day.

Hopefully I make it to Europe today okay.

I guess if you're trying to get to India and get dropped in a random city to get rebooked, London isn't the worst option.

UA 85 EWR-TLV 772 was delayed 21 hours 5 minutes due to "operational difficulties" landed today at 2:20 PM instead of yesterday at 5:15 PM, and cancelled suspicious TLV-YHZ and YHZ-EWR segments.
