If they gave you comp (either miles or an ETC) as a customer service gesture previously, you can keep that and take the EU261 comp offered pursuant to the letter in addition. That's likely what the other passenger was referring to.

The app seems to indicate it was a crew duty time issue.

10/20 UA895 (777-200) ORD-HKG diverted to SFO, changed to 777-300, departed for HKG

UA895 ORD-HKG a 3-class 777-200 on 10/20 diverted to SFO arriving at 7:44 pm local time. It then departed at 10:09 PM using a 2 class 777-300 with arrival of 2:56 AM on October 22, almost 9 hours late.
That means UA896 HKG-ORD is being flown with the bigger 777-300 on 10/22 which has 10 across in Y vs 9 on the broken metal. If you are on that flight, check your seat assignments pronto.

The diversion happened up over Hudson bay and they flew all the way to SFO (over 8 hour flight!). But it appears UA had the replacement metal all ready to go as they deplaned at Gate 86 and boarded the new plane at Gate 89 and departed in a little over 2 hours.

Also noticed that as of Monday, the 3 class 777-200's 8 F seats are now counted as C class so the number of C goes from 40 to 48 in the SEAT MAP portion of the app.

MX issue meant ETOPS restriction perhaps?

A switch like that is better or worse depending on where you were before. Worse if in F, much better if in J, much worse if in E+ (Assuming heavy load—now fewer E+ seats and 10-across), marginally better if E- (10-across but with many empty seats)

i was on flight 895 (ORD-HKG to ORD-SFO-HKG). The mechanical was an inoperable navigational system that we needed to fly over the North Pole. Captain said everything else was working fine but we had to divert to SFO. When we got to SFO, we arrived at gate 86 and our new flight with new crew was across from 86 at gate 89. New equipment meant new seat assignments for EVERYONE so the gate agents weren’t entertaining upgrades. They had to account for every single person and if any pax didn’t board, I think United would have had to figure out how to get that pax’s luggage who didn’t board off the new plane. Fortunately, everyone boarded and we weren’t too delayed. I was sitting at 19K and the Polaris flight attendants revisited the upgrade list and as people mentioned the new plane had more seats. There were an additional 12 seats in J so a few lucky people who were sitting in Ynin our original ORD-HKG flight got to sit up front.

when we got to HKG, it was around 0300. Most pax had their final destination as HKG but a handful of us had connections. Thank goodness United has actual united staff at HKG and not contracted staff because they really helped us out! I had a connecting flight to HGH that I missed with CX but the united gate agents at HKG worked really hard to get me on a flight to PVG instead around 0730. They threw in a meal voucher for our delay inconvenience.

I do have a question though: the United auto email that I got about the delay offered $300 or 15k award miles. I took the $300 in etc but I completely missed my trip in HGH. I feel like I should bring this up to get more $$ or am I just getting greedy? Do you think it’s worth it to revisit when I get back stateside? I’m Platinum if that matters.

Sorry for the long response! Doing this from my phone and in China so it’s incredibly difficult to stay connected with them FT world.

Here's a complete census of GUM and the GUM fleet:

Two planes remain for the 50-knot wind at GUM:
N211UA arrived HNL-GUM 10/24 evening. 10/25 UA200 to HNL (sch 0640) now delayed to noon.
N15712 arrived NGO-GUM 10/24 afternoon.

N33294 departed GUM-NRT as UA196. UA197 NRT-GUM was canceled.
N73299 departed GUM-NRT as UA873. UA874 NRT-GUM was canceled.
N21723 departed GUM-ROR early as UA157. UA158 ROR-GUM canceled.
N39726 departed GUM-HKG early as UA159. UA116 HKG-GUM delayed 12 hours.
N77295 departed GUM-MNL early as UA183. UA184 MNL-GUM canceled.
N36280 was evacuated GUM-ROR as UA2731. Scheduled to return as UA2732 at some point.

N79279 departed GUM-...-HNL as UA155. Return on UA154 HNL-...-GUM should be on-time.

10/24 UA89 EWR-PEK delayed 2+ hours because of equipment swap, now waiting for plane UA998 from Brussels
(Likely delaying 10/25 UA88 PEK-EWR also)

Did you have a stopover in HGH that you missed due to the delay, or are you saying you had to redirect from HGH to PVG? If you had a stopover, you may be eligible for a refund for the HKG-HGH and HGH-PVG legs you didn't fly (trip in vain rule), but I am not sure how your voluntary acceptance of a rebooking direct to PVG affects compensation.

PVG-SFO Oct. 29 UA 858 cancelled

UA 858, PVG-SFO, on Oct 29, was cancelled due to portable water issue. (See https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30365996-post645.html) They simply could not fix it. Pax was on this plane for more than 3 hr before deplaned. The plane (as UA 198, LAX-PVG) had this same problem before arrived at PVG the previous night; yet UA did not fix it although the plane was on ground for 18 hrs. 😭😭😭

This was my second IRROP at PVG. The first one was very bad, four hours on plane and another 3 hr to reach a far away hotel. This time, I changed to PVG-ORD flight. This was almost nightmare-ish if I did not deal with gate agent in time. 1K agent simply did not know that I had to cancel the Chinese immigration stamp and had to go through immigration and security check again. So, do not try to rebook through phone agent while airside at PVG/PEK.

Did United CC provide "I'm sorry" compensation? I'm sure it would be a healthy one in this case. I just received a $200 TCVA voucher for broken WIFI on a trans-con on Saturday, so I would think this would warrant $300+.

I did not get a "I am sorry" email from United because I was no longer on the cancelled PVG-SFO flight. I did go to united.com/appreciation site and input UA 858, travel date, and my MileagePlus number. Apparently, the system did not have any memory on my original booking. Anyway, I will send an email to 1K Voice or Customer Care. Hopefully, I will get some compensation.

Edit: jjmoore: you are right; the compensation was more than $300 TCVA.
