UA135 emergency and return to ZRH

Anyone know what happened? sydtogla pointed this one out to me, 1hr after departure UA1U5 (ZRH-EWR) squawked 7700, appeared to dump fuel and returned to ZRH. Apparently lost quite a bit of speed at the beginning of the emergency.

I suspect mechanical, landed back at ZRH now.

I believe the plane is visible on this live cam:

Just saw a guy fiddling around on the cockpit window:

On a semi-related note, I recently learned that the app Flightradar24 lets you set push notifications if any airplane in the world squawks for an emergency. I got a notification for this flight.

Given the guy climbing on the cockpit window, cracked windshield, perhaps?

I think that's how sydtogla found out about it

Would explain the sudden speed reduction. I'd imagine one would want minimal dynamic pressure on a cracked window

How are the passengers on the flight being re-routed? Was there enough time to get them up to LHR or FRA for later TATL flights?

There are two 5 PM flights out of FRA, UA to IAD and AC to YYZ which have a good feeder out of ZRH, a 4:30 out of MUC to EWR (probably the best bet if there is availability), and one option out of LHR to EWR. I am assuming a 1 hour MCT and one hour to rebook and board. It's dimly possible that one could take LX8 to ORD and avoid re-hubbing completely.

It is being logged as a cracked windshield. Reg number is N78060. Judging by altitude graphs no loss in pressure, they climbed at same time as the significant AS drop. Also significant fuel dump around Alsasce and western Switzerland before coming in to ZRH.

I love FR24 push notifications, and I get 7700 all the time but this one was worth paying attention to.

Technical issues. I'm assuming it was software given it was on the ground for only 17h. The same frame was involved in an incident at Haneda 3 days before when a tyre blew out upon take off.

UA 924 IAD-LHR delayed to 4a

The late-night flight becoming a really late-night flight while they try to fix the air conditioning.
