GS/Global Services is the highest tier of elite status. It is by invitation -- the invite criteria is not public but seems to require substantial annual spending with UA both in terms of absolute dollar amounts and purchasing higher fare classes (higher cpm - cents per mile). There are also reports of GS status being comped by UA Marketing to VIPs in companies who sign corporate travel deals with UA. The sole published way to qualify is to become a 4MM, having flown 4 million BIS miles on UA metal (plus additional grandfathered credits at the time of the UA/CO merger).
GS have significantly enhanced services / benefits over 1Ks. There is little said publicly by UA on GS benefits and/or qualification.

Known facts from United:
Global Services recognizes the extraordinary dedication of our top flyers. We consider a number of factors beyond the usual Premier-qualifying criteria.
We look at your travel spend on United-operated flights relative to that of other top Premier flyers over recent consecutive years.
Usually, members invited to Global Services tend to consistently purchase premium cabins or fully refundable tickets.

All benefits noted below require calling a GS agent:
- GS can create saver economy award space (XN) if T inventory is available.
- GS can create saver business award space (IN) if R inventory is available.
- GS can upgrade economy awards (XN or YN) into Business First with a GPU if PN inventory is available.
- GS can upgrade business awards (IN or JN) into Polaris First with a GPU if ON inventory is available.
- GS can confirm any waitlisted instrument-supported upgrade under T-72 hours provided 2 seats remain for sale afterwards and they are at the top of the waitlist
- GS can create saver Polaris First (O) space at T-72 hours if they are already booked in saver business (IN), provided one seat remains for sale after
- GS are entitled to one saver award seat in the same class of service with their purchase of any premium fare. GS agents can open space if it is not available. UPDATE: as of 7/21/17 must have >2 for sale within 72hrs of flight
- GS can upgrade a companion from coach to biz when flying on a paid biz fare, even if R or PN is not available, as long as J/F>1. Companion needs to be W or greater intl.
- (Only ONE of the two above options can be exercised per premium fare.)
- GS cannot double upgrade. Economy -> PN -> ON is not allowed. *Some reports of TOD being offered at OLCI.
- GS can buy up from Basic Economy fares, which is usually forbidden

That stinks - I contemplated booking a tight connection via LAX instead, in hopes that I'd get upgraded and a tarmac trip Alas...not worth the risk!

Just wanted to share a very pleasant experience I had with GS a month ago. I had a PNR booked from IAH-SFO with my mother (no status) on it as a companion. We were both CPU'ed at T-120. My sister (also no status) decided to join us on this segment and bought her ticket last minute using my miles and on a separate PNR. When checking at the GS lobby in IAH, I asked the GS agent if there's any possibility CPUing my sister. The GS agent never brought up the fact that my mother was already my companion, but immediately informed me that she will put her on the flight's gate upgrade list. She later reaches out to me via email telling me that she was put at the top of the upgrade list and there was a good chance she would clear. I checked the UA app and she was indeed number 1 on the list with at least 10 or so below her. There happened to be one F seat left and she cleared into it.
Its really pleasant to see some GS agents going above and beyond for us. It really helps me appreciate my loyalty with UA.

Has anyone had success with having the GS Desk process upgrades (GPUs) for companions traveling on a separate ticket at T-120 or less on international segments?

I got a surprise today
I was booked IND-PEK in business by way of EWR; I had picked the routing to snare a middle aisle in a 777 with 2-2-2 configuration. As luck would have it, the IND-EWR flight was cancelled due to ATC in Newark, and UA rebooked me through ORD with 2-4-2 seating 777--without a confirmed seat.
i called the GS line, and told them I wasn't very happy about losing my aisle access with nobody needing to climb over me. The new flight was showing 4 open seats in first, so I asked if I could use a GPU or miles to upgrade. Chris put me on hold to talk with her supervisor, but after 20 minutes I had to hang up (door closed on different flight the day before.
So so I assumed I just needed to accept a possible middle seat, and didn't call back. During the night I got assigned 10J (aisle). Waiting in the lounge at ORD (pretty nice, BTW), I checked the app about half an hour before the flight and discovered I'd been upgraded to first!
Yay, what a wonderful surprise!

New forced upgrade rules........as explained to me.......FWIW
1. Agents can no longer clear any type of upgrade with T《 24.
2. Agents can clear CPU between 120 》T 》24 as long as PN is available.
3. If T 《 72 and no PN is available, agents can clear GPU and RPU if unsold is 》3.
I learned this the hard way as I waited inside T24 to try for a CPU on a flight tomorrow. Flight is PN2. Agent would have cleared it at T24+. Will probably be given away for TOD or hard sell offer at the gate........DEN departure.
Anyone else want to see if you are told differently.

As suggested two weeks ago emailed GS. Received a phone call from GS with info as stated by LAXOGG. The ONLY thing that may make a difference is for every one of us to contact GS with our concerns. The program is going backwards and the benefits have decreased. On Monday would like to return home earlier but nothing about this policy is GS friendly. Not able to confirm a upgrade within 24 hours with PN showing when doing a SDC. Pathetic! Please do your part and contact GS. Thank you.

I SDCed last week to another flight only because PN was available and the agent cleared me into F.
That's the only way they can clear it if F < 3.

I intend to let UA know that this new policy wrinkle diminishes the value/brand of GS but need help decodifying the wrinkle to "complaint letter" English. Can someone help me insert the right lingo below:

I have been a member of your Global Service program since United merged with Continental. While i value this program, i am concerned that the benefits made available to your most valued customers are being gradually eroded overvtime. The most recent reduction was implemented on August 1. Upgrades from economy to first glass are no longer available to GS members within 24 hours of a scheduled flight unless at least 3,FC seats are open either for sale or upgrade. Previously, GS customers were eligible for an upgrade as long as [HELP!].
GS customers are enthusiastic, loyal supporters of United. Benefits like the one recently withdrawn are an important part of that equation. I am not pleased with this decision and respectfully request that you re-evaluate this decision. I know from discussions with other GS customers that this is a major source of dissatisfaction with those customers as well
Thank you in advance for your attention to his

From what I was told, GS agents can no longer force any upgrade (GPU, RPU or CPU) when T《 24. It all goes over to gate control. You are SOL, according to the agent I spoke with if trying get to force an upgrade inside T24.
