I am scheduled to fly UA 3461, RDU-EWR, scheduled departure 12:19. It is now delayed until 15:29, awaiting the arrival of UA 3601. That aircraft previously operated UA 3453 (PIT-EWR) which arrived 19 minutes early at 12:36 and will operate UA 3601 (EWR-RDU), estimated arrival 15:09.
The reason for UA 3461's delay? "Delayed due to air traffic control conditions impacting our flight operations"

According to local news, UA 3750 (EWR-RDU), scheduled arrival time 11:40, actual: 11:37, experienced mechanical issues and had to be towed to the gate at RDU.

It seems pretty obvious that UA 3461 was supposed to be operated with the same aircraft that operated UA 3750, but that plan went down the drain because of the mechanical.
So United's attempt to blame ATC for the late departure of UA 3461 looks to be a poor excuse to cover up the mechanical issues experienced by UA 3750. Not only does the time between the arrival of UA 3750 and the departure of UA 3461 indicate that they would be operated with the same aircraft, but the use of the UA 3601 aircraft (expected to arrive early, but still hours after the scheduled UA 3461 departure) was obviously not planned.
I guess it's nice to be able to blame ATC to avoid being responsible for costs caused by the delay and compensating passengers missing their connections at EWR.

According to Flightstats the history is a bit more complicated.

But at 12:26 PM RDU time, UA3461 was switch from the MX aircraft N865RW to N721YX

Then N721YX was delayed to WX

As has been discussed in http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...etermined.html -- the publicly reported reason is the "last" reason, so if there are multiple reasons for the delay, the original reason is "lost."

If you think you have a claim based on the original MX issue, then UA (and you have full visibility to the history).

Tonight's EWR-DTW was delayed about 6 hours in advance due to ATC. Any idea what that was? Didn't think there was any weather in EWR, and my flight from ITH-EWR was on schedule. Any idea why an ATC cancelation would happen that early? Thankfully got put on the direct DL flight.
